Aberavon Quins RFC
Aberavon Harlequins RFC (nicknamed "The Mighty Quins") is a Welsh rugby union team located in the Fairfield area of Port Talbot, a few minutes away from the town centre and Aberavon. In 1955, the team gained membership of the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU). Today the club is a feeder club for the Ospreys. Aberavon Harlequins RFC have produced many international players over the years, most notably Welsh internationals Richard Hibbard, James Hook, Wales 7's international Jacob Flynn and Welsh international rugby league superstar Regan Grace. History The club was founded in 1891, and they become known as the Aberavon Excel, playing in an all-white strip. After the First World War in 1918, the Excels formed the Aberavon Harlequins R.F.C., which it has been known as since. Maesteg RFC
Maesteg Rugby Football Club is a rugby union team from the town of Maesteg, South Wales. The club currently play in the Division 3B west Central Welsh Rugby Union and is a feeder club for the Ospreys. Club history Maesteg RFC was formed in 1877 in the Llynfi Valley, in the county of Glamorgan. They were county league champions 1912 to 1913. The 1949 team completed their season without losing a single game. In 1978 and 1979 they were the Whitbread league champions. In 1982 they played the Irish Wolfhounds, Crawshays RFC, Toronto Welsh RFC, German Federation and the New Zealand Māoris; they held the latter to a 10–10 draw. These games were thought at the time to be part of the centenary season of the club. It was later discovered that this was untrue, as the centenary was five years earlier. Llantwit Fardre Rugby Football Club is a rugby union team from the village of Llantwit Fardre, South Wales. The club was formed in its present state in 1946 and obtained membership of the Welsh Rugby Union in 1949. Competition format and sponsorship Competition There are 12 clubs in the WRU Division Three South West. During the course of a season (which lasts from September to May) each club plays the others twice, once at their home ground and once at that of their opponents for a total of 22 games for each club, with a total of 132 games in each season. Teams receive four points for a win and two point for a draw, an additional bonus point is awarded to either team if they score four tries or more in a single match. Corus Rugby Football Club was a Welsh rugby union clubs based in Port Talbot. It is now known as Tata Steel RFC, the club is a member of the Welsh Rugby Union and is a feeder club for the Ospreys. The club was historically known as The S.C.O.W, Steel Company of Wales, but changed its name to British Steel RFC in the late 1960s when the steel manufacture British Steel evolved from The SCOW. The name Tata Steel RFC was adopted following the demise of Corus and formally British Steel but locally, the team is still known as "The SCOW". The team plays at the sports ground at Margam (just off J.38 of the M4) which it shares with other sections - Cricket, Soccer, Bowls etc. Although it could be considered as a "works side" traditionally most of its players have not worked within the industry but have been Margam and Port Talbot parishners. Trevor Lloyd (rugby Union)
Trevor Lloyd (5 September 1924 – 5 October 2015) was a international rugby union player. Lloyd hailed from Taibach a district in Port Talbot, where he started playing club rugby with the Aberavon Quins RFC, he made his debut for Wales on 14 March 1953 versus Ireland and was selected for the 1955 British Lions tour to South Africa. He also played club rugby for Maesteg RFC, captaining the team for three seasons, and coached the senior club from 1956 to 1959. Lloyd finished his playing career at home town club Aberavon Harlequins where during the 1955/56 season and directly after touring with the Lions, he captained the side into their inaugural season as a club of the Welsh Rugby Union. Lloyd died on 5 October 2015.
