Maesteg RFC
Maesteg Rugby Football Club is a rugby union team from the town of Maesteg, South Wales. The club currently play in the Division 3B west Central Welsh Rugby Union and is a feeder club for the Ospreys. Club history Maesteg RFC was formed in 1877 in the Llynfi Valley, in the county of Glamorgan. They were county league champions 1912 to 1913. The 1949 team completed their season without losing a single game. In 1978 and 1979 they were the Whitbread league champions. In 1982 they played the Irish Wolfhounds, Crawshays RFC, Toronto Welsh RFC, German Federation and the New Zealand Māoris; they held the latter to a 10–10 draw. These games were thought at the time to be part of the centenary season of the club. It was later discovered that this was untrue, as the centenary was five years earlier. Maesteg were promoted to the Welsh Premier Division in 2005, but were relegated back to division one when they came bottom of the league in the 2007/08 season. Notable former playe ... Maesteg
Maesteg (; ) is a town and community in Bridgend County Borough, Wales. Maesteg lies at the northernmost end of the Llynfi Valley, close to the border with Neath Port Talbot. In 2011, Maesteg had a population of 20,612. The English translation of Maesteg is 'fair field'. Maesteg officially became a town in 1826 and is celebrating it's bicentenary in 2026 with organised events and celebrations being organised by a committee of residents and local groups and businesses. Historically a part of Glamorgan, the growth of the town started with the opening of ironworks in the 1820s and 1830s. Once a coal mining area, the last pit closed in 1985. With the decline of the coal industry and, more recently, the closure of one large factory producing cosmetics and another manufacturing vehicle components, the valley has become a residential/dormitory area for the Port Talbot, Bridgend and Cardiff journey to work areas. 11% (1,867 out of 20,702) of the town's population speak Welsh with ... Billy Banks (rugby)
William Martin Banks (11 January 1925 – August 1991) was a Welsh rugby union and World Cup winning professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1940s and 1950s. He played club level rugby union (RU) for Maesteg RFC, as a scrum-half and representative level rugby league (RL) for Great Britain, Wales, Other Nationalities, British Empire and Combined Nationalities, and at club level for Leeds, Wakefield Trinity, Huddersfield, Whitehaven and Salford, as a , or . Background Billy Banks was born in Maesteg, Wales in 1925. After his rugby league career ended, he became a taxi driver in Huddersfield. He returned frequently to Maesteg to visit family and friends. David Watts (rugby Union)
David Watts (14 March 1886 – 14 July 1916) was a Welsh international rugby union forward who played club rugby for Maesteg. He won four caps for Wales, all in 1914. Rugby career Watts came to prominence in Welsh rugby when he was part of the Maesteg team that won the Glamorgan Challenge Cup in 1912. In 1914 Watts was selected to represent Wales as part of the Five Nations Championship. His first game was on the 17 January in a game against England at Twickenham. Under the captaincy of Jenkin Alban Davies, Wales lost the opening game but won the final three games of the tournament. Of all Watts' matches, the most notable was the final game at the Balmoral Showgrounds against Ireland. The game was an overly violent affair, after members of both packs ran into each other the night before the game. Aaron Rees
Aaron Rees (2 August 1886 — 22 January 1950) was a Welsh international rugby union player. Born in Maesteg, Rees captained his hometown club Maesteg RFC and gained a single Wales cap, as one of their forwards in the one-off match against the 1919 New Zealand Army team in Swansea. Alan Henry Morgan Rees (17 February 1938 – 17 March 2022) was a Welsh rugby union and professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1960s. Charlie Pugh
Charles Henry Pugh (7 March 1896 – 23 January 1951) was a Welsh international rugby union player who played rugby for three notable Welsh clubs, Aberavon, Maesteg and Neath. He was capped seven times for Wales and was part of the Welsh team that faced the touring 1924 New Zealand team. Rugby career Pugh was first selected to represent Wales in the opening match of the 1924 Five Nations Championship. Played at home at St Helen's, Wales faced England, who had finished the previous season as home nations Grand Slam winners. Under the captaincy of Joe Rees, Pugh was one of nine new Welsh caps in the team who would eventually lose 17-9 to England. Trevor Lloyd (rugby Union)
Trevor Lloyd (5 September 1924 – 5 October 2015) was a international rugby union player. Lloyd hailed from Taibach a district in Port Talbot, where he started playing club rugby with the Aberavon Quins RFC, he made his debut for Wales on 14 March 1953 versus Ireland and was selected for the 1955 British Lions tour to South Africa. He also played club rugby for Maesteg RFC, captaining the team for three seasons, and coached the senior club from 1956 to 1959. Lloyd finished his playing career at home town club Aberavon Harlequins where during the 1955/56 season and directly after touring with the Lions, he captained the side into their inaugural season as a club of the Welsh Rugby Union. Fred Hutchinson (rugby Union)
Frederick Osborne Hutchinson (1867–1941) was a Welsh international rugby union back row who played club rugby for Maesteg, Bridgend and Neath and international rugby for Wales. Rugby career Hutchinson originally played club rugby for his local team Maesteg, before eventually joining one of the largest clubs in the area, Neath. While representing Neath, Hutchinson was selected to represent Wales as part of the 1894 Home Nations Championship, facing Ireland away in Belfast. Hutchinson was one of three new caps to come into the Welsh squad, with Jack Elliott at three-quarters and David Nicholl joining Hutchinson in the pack. Although Wales had been beaten heavily by England in the opening game of the tournament, a morale-boosting win over Scotland had lifted Welsh hopes of a victory over Ireland. Chico Hopkins
Ray "Chico" Hopkins (born 8 July 1946) is a Welsh former international rugby player who was also a member of the British Lions. Background Ray Hopkins was born in the industrial town of Maesteg in Cwm Llynfi - the Llynfi Valley - in the county of Glamorgan in south Wales. Following his education he worked as a National Coal Board fitter at their workshop in Maesteg. Club career Hopkins played youth rugby union for the Maesteg RFC academy.
