Abe Lyman
Abe Lyman (born Abraham Simon; August 4, 1897 – October 23, 1957) was a bandleader from the 1920s to the 1940s. He made recordings, appeared in films and provided the music for numerous radio shows, including '' Your Hit Parade''. Biography Born in Chicago, Illinois, on August 4, 1897, to an Ashkenazi Jewish immigrant family, Lyman's name at birth was Abraham Simon. He and his brother, Mike, changed their last name to Lyman because they both thought it sounded better. Abe learned to play the drums when he was young, and at the age of 14 he had a job as a drummer in a Chicago café. Around 1919, he was regularly playing music with two other notable future big band leaders, Henry Halstead and Gus Arnheim, in California. In Los Angeles Mike Lyman opened the Sunset, a night club popular with such film stars as Mary Pickford, Norma Talmadge, Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, and Harold Lloyd. Frank Sylvano
Francesco Lanzalotti Sylvano (August 17, 1901 – September 1, 1964) was an American tenor of the 1920s and 1930s. A member of the Isham Jones Orchestra, he was described as "the romantic voice of the air." Frankie Laine, who in his youth met Sylvano, characterized him as having a "bouncy style" in his 1993 autobiography, ''That Lucky Old Son: The Autobiography of Frankie Laine''. Gussie Mueller
Gustave "Gussie" Mueller (April 17, 1890 – December 16, 1965) was an early jazz clarinetist. The New Orleans, Louisiana-born Mueller was a top clarinetist with Papa Jack Laine's bands in New Orleans before going to Chicago, Illinois with Tom Brown's band in early 1915. After serving in the Army in World War I he moved to California and joined the early Paul Whiteman Orchestra, with which he moved to New York City. He helped give the Whiteman band a touch of the Dixieland jazz style. One of the Whiteman Orchestra's early hit records, as well as one of the unfortunately few recordings where Mueller can be heard prominently, is Wang Wang Blues which Mueller dominates in a style similar to Larry Shields. Mueller also shares composer credit on "Wang Wang". According to Whiteman, Mueller was reluctant to learning how to read music, for fear that it would impair his abilities as a "hot player". ''Good News'' is a 1930 American pre-Code musical film directed by Nick Grinde, and starring Bessie Love, Cliff Edwards, and Penny Singleton. The film was shot in black-and-white, although the finale was in multicolor. The film is preserved at the UCLA Film and Television Archive. The surviving print lacks the color finale; no footage of the finale is known to survive. The film was based on the 1927 stage production of the same name. Another film based on the musical, also called '' Good News'', was released in 1947. By the 1940s, the 1930 production was not shown in the United States due to its Pre-Code content, which included sexual innuendo and lewd suggestive humor. ''Hold Everything'' is a 1930 American pre-Code film. This musical comedy film was photographed entirely in early two-color Technicolor. The first all Technicolor musical comedy film was "On With the Show" in 1929. "Hold Everything" was adapted from the DeSylva-Brown-Henderson Broadway musical of the same name that had served as a vehicle for Bert Lahr and starred Winnie Lightner and Joe E. Brown as the comedy duo. The romantic subplot was played by Georges Carpentier and Sally O'Neil. Only three songs from the stage show remained: " You're the Cream in My Coffee", "To Know You Is To Love You", and "Don't Hold Everything".
