Aaadonta
''Aaadonta'' is a genus of air-breathing land snails, terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusks in the family Endodontidae. Specimens from this genus are endemic to Palau. Species Species in the genus ''Aaadonta'' include: * '' Aaadonta angaurana'' Solem, 1976 * '' Aaadonta constricta'' Semper, 1874; Type species * '' Aaadonta fuscozonata'' (E.H. Beddome, 1889) * '' Aaadonta irregularis'' Semper, 1874 * '' Aaadonta kinlochi'' Solem, 1976 * '' Aaadonta pelewana'' Solem, 1976 The genus was given its unusual name by the biologist Alan Solem, who wanted it to appear first in any alphabetical list of endodontid genera. For animal genera, the first alphabetically listed name is '' Aaaaba'', which is a genus of beetles from Australia. The current conservation status, according to the IUCN Red List, varies depending on species, though they all fall into the larger category of being threatened. One cause of a low population stated by Solem could be that ant colonies that come into the ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Zyzzyxdonta
''Zyzzyxdonta alata'' is a species of air-breathing land snail, a terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusk in the family Endodontidae. This is the only species in the genus ''Zyzzyxdonta''. The genus was named ''Zyzzyxdonta'' because it has many features that are the opposite to the genus ''Aaadonta''. The name, given to the snail by malacologist Alan Solem, is the last word in many species dictionaries, just after ''Zyzzyx''; however, they both, in fact, precede ''Zyzzyzus''. They live in the Pacific islands of Palau and Fiji. Description The shell of ''Zyzzyxdonta alata'' has apical sculpture typical of the Endodontidae. The postnuclear whorls have widely spaced radial ribs which protrude into hollow, winglike structures at the carinated periphery. There are about 5 whorls that are rather loosely coiled. The apex is flat, but the spire is slightly elevated. The body whorl has a protruded, keeled periphery, not descending more rapidly, with a distinct subperipheral sulc ... Endodontidae
Endodontidae is a taxonomic family of very small air-breathing land snails and slugs, terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusks in the superfamily Punctoidea. This family, which includes both snails and slugs, appears to have once been much more diverse, but has declined, and is now endangered due to human activity. Anatomy In this family, the number of haploid chromosomes lies between 26 and 35 (according to the values in this table).Barker G. M.: Gastropods on Land: ''Phylogeny, Diversity and Adaptive Morphology''. in Barker G. M. (ed.): The biology of terrestrial molluscs'. CABI Publishing, Oxon, UK, 2001, . 1-146, cited pages: 139 and 142. Distribution and conservation status This family is found only in the Pacific islands. The family is critically endangered and on the verge of extinction, mainly because of habitat loss due to human development. On American Samoa, some species are in decline due to predation by introduced fire ants. On Rurutu in French Polynesia the ... He was one of the most renowned land snail experts of his time and had earned a reputation for his comprehensive revisions of mainly terrestrial pulmonates. He worked on land snails from all regions of the world but became particularly known for his revisions of land snails from Australasia and various Pacific Islands. His 140 academic papers dealt with the snail phylogeny, feeding patterns and reproductive strategies. He named many taxa, amongst them about 350 species of Australian land snails, and several genera.Cameron, R. A. D., B. M. Pokryszko, and F. E. Wells. 2005. Alan Solem's work on the ... Type Species
In zoological nomenclature, a type species (''species typica'') is the species name with which the name of a genus or subgenus is considered to be permanently taxonomically associated, i.e., the species that contains the biological type specimen(s). Article 67.1 A similar concept is used for suprageneric groups and called a type genus. In botanical nomenclature, these terms have no formal standing under the code of nomenclature, but are sometimes borrowed from zoological nomenclature. In botany, the type of a genus name is a specimen (or, rarely, an illustration) which is also the type of a species name. The species name that has that type can also be referred to as the type of the genus name. Names of genus and family ranks, the various subdivisions of those ranks, and some higher-rank names based on genus names, have such types. Arnoldia (journal)
''Arnoldia'' is a quarterly magazine published by the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University. It is an interdisciplinary publication with articles covering a broad range of topics including plant exploration, plant taxonomy and biogeography, landscape design, and more. While the authors are primarily researchers and other plant professionals, all are encouraged to write with a narrative and explanatory style that is accessible to a wide range of readers. History ''Arnoldia'' was established as the ''Bulletin of Popular Information'' in 1911. The Arnold Arboretum's first director, Charles Sprague Sargent, viewed the publication as a means of alerting visitors to the "flowering of important plants" in the Arnold Arboretum's collections. Initially, the ''Bulletins'' were issued only during the growing season, and with a ''Bulletin'' in hand, there was no reason a visitor should miss the flowering or fruiting of any plant on the grounds. After Sargent's death in March 1927, Ernest He ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Secondary Forest
A secondary forest (or second-growth forest) is a forest or woodland area which has re-grown after a timber harvest or clearing for agriculture, until a long enough period has passed so that the effects of the disturbance are no longer evident. It is distinguished from an old-growth forest (primary or primeval forest), which has not recently undergone such disruption, and complex early seral forest, as well as third-growth forests that result from harvest in second growth forests. Secondary forest regrowing after timber harvest differs from forest regrowing after natural disturbances such as fire, insect infestation, or windthrow because the dead trees remain to provide nutrients, structure, and water retention after natural disturbances. However, often after natural disturbance the timber is harvested and removed from the system, in which case the system more closely resembles secondary forest rather than seral forest. Description Depending on the forest, the development ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |
