''A Sonication'' is the seventh studio album by the German technical death metal band Obscura. It was released by the music label Nuclear Blast on 7 February 2025. Background The album was written and recorded in Studio Fredman in Gothenburg, Sweden, and produced by Fredrik Nordström and Steffen Kummerer. Music videos for the tracks "Evenfall", "Silver Linings", and "In Solitude" have been released. Touring Obscura embarked on a European tour called “Silver Linings” in February 2025 with bands Rings of Saturn and Gorod. Rings of Saturn have been replaced with Skeletal Remains. They have also planned a North American tour for April and May, with bands Atheist (celebrating the 35th anniversary of their debut album ''Piece of Time''), Origin, Decrepit Birth, and Fractal Universe. Obscura is a German technical death metal band from Landshut, founded by guitarist and vocalist Steffen Kummerer in 2002. The band has released seven studio albums, a compilation album and fifteen music videos since its formation. Their latest album A Sonication was released on 7 February 2025 via Nuclear Blast. History ''Illegimitation'' (2002–2003) Obscura was formed in late 2002 by guitarist Steffen Kummerer, drummer Jonas Baumgartl, guitarist Armin Seitz and bassist/vocalist Martin Ketzer with the name Illegimitation. Performing local shows, the band booked their own concept tour in Bavaria called "Blasting Bavaria Tour" in 2003, followed by editions in 2004, 2005 and 2007. Sami Yli-Sirniö
Sami Yli-Sirniö (born 10 April 1972) is a Finnish musician who is currently the lead guitarist of the German band Kreator and the Finnish metal bands Waltari and Barren Earth. He spent part of his life in Germany and thus has strong ties with the German metal scene. German '' Rock Hard'' magazine featured him in 2007 as a "forgotten guitar hero". Career While living in Germany, he served as a session musician for rock band In Rags, gothic act Tiamat, and thrash metal band Grip Inc. For both Tiamat and Grip Inc., he played sitar, his second favourite instrument. Yli-Sirniö is currently endorsed by Ibanez. Decrepit Birth
Decrepit Birth is an American death metal band from Santa Cruz, California. They have released two studio albums through Unique Leader Records and two through Nuclear Blast, and a demo independently. All of their studio albums feature artwork by renowned fantasy artist Dan Seagrave. In October 2021, it was announced vocalist Bill Robinson was taking an "extended hiatus" from the band and was being replaced by Mac Smith, who would tour with the band for the foreseeable future. Origin is an American technical death metal band from Topeka, Kansas, founded in 1990 under the monikers Necrotomy and Thee Abomination. They have been recognized by music critics and metal fans alike for combining a harsh sound with a high level of technical skill. Origin's music is characterized by almost exclusive use of several specific, difficult playing techniques; blast beats, multiple death growled vocals, and arpeggios and sweep picking on both the guitars and the bass guitar. ''Piece of Time'' is the debut album by Florida death metal band Atheist, recorded in 1988 and released locally on August 30, 1989 through Active Records, and internationally in 1990 through Metal Blade Records. ''Piece of Time'' is the only Atheist album to feature bassist Roger Patterson, although he wrote a great deal of the basslines used on the band's sophomore album '' Unquestionable Presence''. Background The album's release was delayed due to Atheist's original record label Mean Machine Records going bankrupt, which forced the band to find a new label. Gorod is a technical death metal band from Bordeaux, France. History Gorod originally formed in 1997 under the name Gorgasm, but later changed their named to Gorod in 2005, to avoid confusion with an American death metal band of the same name. They released their debut album ''Neurotripsicks'' on Deadsun Records in 2004, which was later re-released by Willowtip Records a year after. They later followed up with '' Leading Vision'' in 2006. Studio Fredman
Studio Fredman is a well-known recording studio in Gothenburg, Sweden, owned and operated by producer Fredrik Nordström. It is popular among Swedish metal bands, with artists such as At the Gates, Deathstars, Nightrage, Norwegian band Dimmu Borgir, Arch Enemy, Soilwork, Dark Tranquillity, In Flames, Zonaria, Machinae Supremacy, HammerFall, England's Bring Me the Horizon, A Breach of Silence, and Opeth recording multiple releases in the studio.
