Armée Patriotique Rwandaise Basketball Club, commonly known simply as APR, is a Rwandan basketball club based in Kigali. Owned and funded by the Ministry of Defence of Rwanda, the team plays in the Rwanda Basketball League (RBL) and in the Basketball Africa League (BAL) for the 2024 season. Nicknamed the "Lions", the team is the most decorated team in the country, as APR has won a record 15 national championships. History Originating during the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF)'s liberation struggle during the Rwandan Civil War in 1993, the club was established to serve as a means to engage and occupy soldiers during a ceasefire amid the peace talks that eventually led to the signing of the Arusha Accords. Rwanda Basketball League
The Rwanda Basketball League (RBL) (formerly the National Basketball League Rwanda) is the top professional basketball league in Rwanda. Its season usually runs from November to September. The winners of the NBL season qualify for the BAL Qualifying Tournaments, qualifiers for the Basketball Africa League (BAL). The league currently consists of 10 teams, most of them being from the country's capital Kigali. The current champion of the RBL are APR BBC, APR, who are the league’s most decorated team with a record 15 championships. Other notable teams are REG BBC, REG and their rivals Patriots BBC, Patriots, who have been powerhouses in recent years. United Generations Basketball
United Generations Basketball, also known as UGB, is a Rwandan semi-professional basketball team based in Kigali. The team plays in the Rwanda Basketball League (RBL), the top division in the country since 1998. The team is co-owned by singer Bruce Melodie, who became a minority shareholder in 2024. Every year, UGB hosts an exhibition tournament named the Legacy Tournament in honour of club founders Championat Aimable and Jean De Dieu Nizeyimana. Among the team's most famous players are Jean Jacques Boissy and Guibert Nijimbere. Patriots Basketball Club, also known as Patriots, is a professional basketball club based in Kigali, Rwanda. Established in 2014, it plays its home games at Amahoro Indoor Stadium. The team is a four-time champion of the Rwanda Basketball League (RBL). In the 2021 season, the Patriots played in the Basketball Africa League (BAL). The club gained worldwide attention when American star rapper J. Cole signed with the team to play in the BAL. FIBA Africa Clubs Champions Cup
The FIBA Africa Basketball League (formerly named the FIBA Africa Clubs Champions Cup) was the highest caliber men's professional basketball competition for clubs until 2020, organized by the FIBA Africa and played by the champions of the leagues of the African countries. The league was replaced by the Basketball Africa League (BAL) from 2020. History The competition was founded in 1971. A year later, in 1972, Hit Trésor SC won the inaugural championship. Rwandan Heroes Cup
The Heroes' Cup, also known as the Heroes' Day Tournament, is an annual basketball cup competition for the premier teams in Rwanda. The Heroes Cup tournaments are organised by their respective federations in partnership with the Chancellery for Heroes, National Orders and Decorations of Honour (CHENO). The final of the cup is played each year on Heroes' Day#Rwanda, National Heroes' Day on February 1. 2024 Rwanda Basketball Cup
The 2024 Rwanda Basketball Cup was the inaugural season of the Rwanda Basketball Cup, the cup competition for men's teams in Rwanda. It is organised by FERWABA, the national basketball association. The first games were played on 26 April 2024, while the playoffs began on 9 July 2024, and ended end on 9 August 2024. The first season consisted of 21 teams from the Rwanda Basketball League as well as the Rwanda Basketball League Division 2. The first four teams from the 2023 RBL season received direct qualification for the quarterfinals, while the other teams entered the group phase. APR won the inaugural cup title after defeating REG in the final. The winners qualified for the inaugural Rwanda Basketball Supercup, which will be held later in the year.
