AINA (organization)
Aina's actions are based on education, information and communication. Its goal is to strengthen civil society through education of children and women, and training in communication and information skills. In 2001, National Geographic Fellow and world-renowned photojournalist Reza Deghati founded Aina to educate and empower Afghans, especially women and children in the use of media, communication and information. Reza believed these skills could contribute to the building of a free and open society by supporting sustainable development, promoting human rights, and strengthening national unity. Since its inception, Aina has had a significant impact on civil society in Afghanistan. Over 1,000 women and men have been trained in media and communication skills, with more than 90% now employed using these skills. The mass media in Afghanistan includes printing, broadcasting, and digital. It is mainly in Dari and Pashto, the official languages of the nation. According to the Attorney General's Office of Afghanistan, "there are 1,879 active media outlets in Afghanistan which were called one of the main achievements of the country in the past 18 years." Following the Taliban takeover in 2021, there is a concern that there will be a significant decrease in mass media in Afghanistan. Media history The first newspaper, ''Shams-i Nahar'' (Morning Sun) was published in 1873 during the rule of Sher Ali Khan. Another newspaper, ''Siraj-ul-Akhbar'' (Lamp of the News) was initially published on January 11, 1906, with Abdul-Rauf as editor.
