AFN Spectrum
AFN Spectrum is the third channel of the American Forces Network. It started in 1997 as more of a conservative culture-oriented channel with programming from cable networks and classic TV series. In a way, it mimicked the "superstation" concept from cablecasters TBS and WGN America. However, the Spectrum lineup currently contains more conventional programming, like ''American Idol'' and ''Ugly Betty ''Ugly Betty'' is an American comedy-drama television series developed by Silvio Horta, which aired on American Broadcasting Company, ABC from September 28, 2006, to April 14, 2010. 1080i
In high-definition television (HDTV) and video display technology, 1080i is a video display format with 1080 lines of vertical resolution and Interlaced video, interlaced scanning method. This format was once a standard in HDTV. It was particularly used for broadcast television because it can deliver high-resolution images without needing excessive bandwidth. This format is used in the SMPTE 292M standard. Definition The number "1080" in 1080i refers to the number of horizontal lines that make up the vertical resolution of the display. Each of these lines contributes to the overall detail and clarity of the image. The letter "i" stands for Interlaced video, interlaced. The American Forces Network (AFN) is a government television and radio broadcast service the United States Armed Forces provides to soldiers stationed or assigned overseas, and is headquartered at Fort Meade in Maryland. AFN comprises two subordinate overseas commands and one directorate in the continental United States. Overseas, AFN Europe is headquartered at Sembach Kaserne in Germany and consists of 15 subordinate stations in the countries of Bahrain, Belgium, Cuba, Germany, Greece, Italy, Spain, and Turkey. AFN Prime is the main channel of the American Forces Network. The channel feed airs current sitcoms, dramas, syndicated court shows, talk shows, game shows and reality shows popular in the United States, from U.S. over-the-air and cable networks, with a time delay from 24 hours to six months or more behind the United States airdates. In addition, popular U.S. soap operas such as ''General Hospital'' are aired by AFN on a one-week tape delay. This stream is divided into two feeds (AFN Prime Atlantic and AFN Prime Pacific); the difference between the three is that they are time-shifted so that programs air at the same local time in each of the major regions served: Japan/Korea, Central Europe and Iraq. AFN News
AFN News is a rolling-news channel providing news from all major news outlets. Programming consists of relays of news and current affairs programming seen on US over-the-air and cable networks. History The predecessor of the capacity currently used by AFN News was SATNET, created by the AFRTS in 1978. Test transmissions started in December of that year, eventually replacing the old Television Priority (TPA) packages sent to bases. Regular broadcasting started in 1982, first to Guantanamo Bay, Roosevelt Roads and Panama; then to the joint US-UK military base at Diego Garcia and Keflavik. 17 hours of programming were "de-commercialized" (in order to remove commercial breaks from shows) before being sent to the satellite feed. WGN America was an American subscription television network that operated from November 9, 1978 to February 28, 2021. The service was originally uplinked to satellite by United Video Inc. as a national feed of Chicago independent station WGN-TV, making the station's programming available to cable and satellite providers throughout the United States as the second nationally distributed "superstation" (after Atlanta station WTCG, now operating as the cable-originated TBS, which had become a national service almost two years earlier).
