A-1 Motorway (Montenegro)
The A-1 motorway, called Princess Xenia motorway (Montenegrin language, Montenegrin: Auto-put Princeza Ksenija), named after the Princess Xenia of Montenegro, first female driver in Balkans, is a motorway in Montenegro. This motorway is also known as the Bar-Boljare motorway (Montenegrin language, Montenegrin: Auto-put Bar — Boljare). In 2022, the first part of the motorway was open for public traffic, from Smokovac near Podgorica to Mateševo near Kolašin. It is part of the larger international project between Montenegro and Serbia that connects to the Belgrade–Bar motorway in Serbia. The motorway will connect Belgrade with Podgorica and the harbour city of Bar, Montenegro, Bar, Montenegro's main Port of Bar, seaport. The Port of Bar ( Montenegrin: ''Luka Bar'', ''Лука Бар'', MNSELUBA) is Montenegro's main sea port. It is located in Bar. The EU believes that the Port of Bar is one of the essential elements of transport, and therefore the economy of Montenegro, with almost all overseas trade goods being carried through it. History The Port of Bar was used as a sea port for Shkodër before it was conquered by the Turks in 1571. Right after the conquest of Bar, the Turks constructed a small port with one breakwater and wooden pier. This former Turkish port has been maintained and expanded since 1878, when Montenegro gained Bar after becoming officially independent from Ottoman Turkey. Belgrade–Bar motorway ( sr-cyr, Ауто-пут Београд–Бар, Auto-put Beograd–Bar) is a future motorway that will connect the Serbian capital of Belgrade and Bar, Montenegro's main seaport. Italy, Montenegro and Serbia are lobbying to list the route with Pan-European corridors, and it is frequently referred to as part of proposed Corridor XI, or 4B – an envisioned motorway/ferry corridor linking Bari, Bar, Belgrade and Bucharest. Kolašin (Cyrillic script, Cyrillic: Колашин, ) is a town in northern Montenegro. It has a population of 2,989 (2003 census). Kolašin is the centre of Kolašin Municipality (population 9,949) and an unofficial centre of Morača region, named after Morača River. Etymology Rebecca West wrote that the district was originally named ''Kol I Shen'', which is Albanian for 'St. Nicholas', which was inhabited by Catholic Albanians who converted to Islam and who were expelled in 1858 by local tribes. Princess Xenia Petrović-Njegoš of Montenegro, also known as Princess Ksenija or Kseniya, (22 April 1881 – 10 March 1960) was a member of the House of Petrović-Njegoš as a daughter of Nicholas I of Montenegro.
