93rd Scripps National Spelling Bee
The 93rd Scripps National Spelling Bee was held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Bay Lake, Florida. The finals were held on July 8, 2021, and televised on ESPN2 and ESPN. It was won by Zaila Avant-garde, the first African American to win the Scripps National Spelling Bee, and the second black person to do so (after Jody-Anne Maxwell of Jamaica). Field Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 spelling bee had been canceled for the previous year. For 2021, the first round was held virtually on June 12 and had 209 spellers from the United States and several other countries. There were eleven finalists: ten Americans and one Bahamian, the first from his country to make it to the final. ESPN Wide World Of Sports Complex
The ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex is a multi-purpose sports complex located at Walt Disney World Resort in Bay Lake, Florida, United States, near Orlando. The complex allows families to combine tournaments and competition with a visit to vacation destinations in the area. The complex includes nine venues and hosts numerous professional and amateur sporting events throughout the year. In reference to the weekly ABC Sports television show, '' Wide World of Sports'' (Disney bought ABC in 1996), the complex was originally known as Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex from 1997 until 2010, when it was rebranded with the name of the Disney-owned ESPN. Neroli Oil
Neroli oil is an essential oil produced from the blossom of the bitter orange tree (''Citrus aurantium subsp. amara'' or ''Bigaradia''). Its scent is sweet, honeyed and somewhat metallic with green and spicy facets. Orange blossom is also extracted from the same blossom and both extracts are extensively used in perfumery. Orange blossom can be described as smelling sweeter, warmer and more floral than neroli. The difference between how neroli and orange blossom smell and why they are referred to with different names, is a result of the process of extraction that is used to obtain the oil from the blooms. Neroli is extracted by steam distillation and orange blossom is extracted via a process of enfleurage (rarely used nowadays due to prohibitive costs) or solvent extraction. ''Heliconius'' comprises a colorful and widespread genus of brush-footed butterflies commonly known as the longwings or heliconians. Rolamite
A Rolamite is a technology for very low friction bearings developed by Sandia National Laboratories in the 1960s. It consists of two cylindrical rollers held captive in a channel by an S-shaped metal strip. The strip is under tension, which keeps the rollers pressed together with the strip between them. The rollers move linearly within the channel as they counter-rotate. During the motion each contact surface has the same surface velocity, which results in very low friction. Grape phylloxera is an insect pest of grapevines worldwide, originally native to eastern North America.
