93rd Mechanized Brigade
The 93rd Separate Mechanized Brigade "Kholodnyi Yar" () is a formation of the Ukrainian Ground Forces formed in 1992. It has been described as "one of the most brutally effective" of Ukraine’s front-line brigades. By January 2023, Western analysts claimed that due to captured Russian and donated Western equipment and incorporation of local volunteer battalions into the units structure, the 93rd was the size of an armored Division (military), division, being a mechanized brigade in name only. The brigade is named after the Kholodny Yar Republic, Kholodnyi Yar Republic, a Ukrainian partisan state during the Ukrainian War of Independence. Mechanized Infantry
Mechanized infantry are infantry units equipped with Armoured personnel carrier, armored personnel carriers (APCs) or infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) for transport and combat (see also armoured corps). Division (military)
A division is a large military unit or Formation (military), formation, usually consisting of between 10,000 and 25,000 soldiers. In most armies, a division is composed of several regiments or brigades; in turn, several divisions typically make up a corps. Historically, the division has been the default combined arms unit capable of independent Military tactics, operations. Smaller combined arms units, such as the American regimental combat team (RCT) during World War II, were used when conditions favored them. In recent times, modern Western militaries have begun adopting the smaller brigade combat team (similar to the RCT) as the default combined arms unit, with the division to which they belong being less important. David Axe (born April 11, 1978) is an American military correspondent, blogger, and graphic novelist. Axe founded the website ''War Is Boring'' in 2007 as a webcomic, and later developed it into a news blog. Early life and education David Axe was born on April 11, 1978, in Arlington, Texas. Ukrainian Ground Forces
The Ukrainian Ground Forces (SVZSU, ), also referred to as the Ukrainian army, is a land force, and one of the eight Military branch, branches of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. It was formed from Ukrainian units of the Soviet Army after Declaration of Independence of Ukraine, Ukrainian independence, and its ancestry is traced back to the 1917–22 army of the Ukrainian People's Republic. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, Ukraine retained its Soviet-era army equipment. The Armed Forces were systematically downsized and underinvested in after 1991. As a result, the Ukrainian army had very little of its Soviet equipment in working order by July 2014, and most systems had become antiquated. Pavlo Serhiiovych Palisa () is a Ukrainian soldier, colonel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and a combatant in the Russian-Ukrainian war. Biography In 2007, Palisa graduated from the Lviv Institute of Land Forces of the Lviv Polytechnic National University (now the Hetman Petro Sahaidachnyi National Ground Forces Academy), and in 2019, he graduated from the Command and Staff Institute of the National Defense University of Ukraine. Following the full-scale Russian invasion, he interrupted his studies at the United States Army Command and General Staff College to join the defense of Ukraine. In June 2022, the American educational institution issued a diploma to Pavlo, who was then commanding the 5th Assault Regiment, to loud applause. Kholodny Yar Republic
Kholodny Yar Republic (1919–1922; ) was a self-proclaimed state formation, partisan movement, which ran on part of the lands of the former Ukrainian People's Republic (UPR — or Ukrainian National Republic, UNR), in the Chyhyryn district of the Kyiv province (modern Cherkasy Oblast), in the area of the Kholodny Yar forest tract. The village of Melnyky was its capital. It had a 15,000-strong army composed of peasants and soldiers from the UNR army, which had been defeated by the White Army in Podolia earlier. History In 1918–1922, the Orthodox Motronynsky Monastery became the center of the Ukrainian insurgent movement against the invaders (German occupiers and Russian "white" and "red" invaders), led by the Chuchupaky brothers. Because of the coup, at the request of the abbot, residents of the village of Melnyky formed a self-defense unit to protect the monastery from looting.
