3 Chairs is a musical supergroup consisting of Detroit house music producers Kenny "Moodymann" Dixon Jr., Theo Parrish, Rick Wilhite, and Marcellus Pittman. The group began as a trio in 1997 before the addition of Pittman in 2003. History The group formed as the trio of Dixon, Parrish, and Wilhite in the late 1990s, when they released a series of 12-inch records. With 2003's ''All Over'' EP, they added Pittman to the lineup. Deep House
Deep house is a subgenre of house music that originated in the 1980s, initially fusing elements of Chicago house with the lush chords of 1980s jazz-funk and touches of soul music. Its origins are attributed to the early recordings of Larry Heard (aka Mr. Fingers), including his influential track "Can You Feel It". Characteristics Deep house is known for tempos typically from 110 to 125 bpm, muted basslines, spacious use of percussion elements (typically using a Roland TR-909 drum machine), soft keyboard sounds (pads), use of advanced chord structures, ambient mixes, and soulful vocals. Kenny Dixon Jr., better known by his stage name Moodymann, is an American musician based in Detroit, Michigan. He is the owner of the record labels Mahogani Music and KDJ Records. He is a member of 3 Chairs. Career In 1997, Moodymann released his debut album, ''Silentintroduction'', on Planet E Communications. It compiled the previously released tracks from his own KDJ Records. He released ''Mahogany Brown'' in 1998, ''Forevernevermore'' in 2000, and ''Silence in the Secret Garden'' in 2003. In 2012, he released ''Picture This'' as a free download. It was followed by ''ABCD'' in 2013. His self-titled album, '' Moodymann'', was released in 2014. Theo Parrish
Theo Parrish (born 1972) is an American DJ and record producer based in Detroit, Michigan, and known for his genre-spanning DJ sets and unconventional house productions. He is an owner of the Sound Signature record label. Biography Theo Parrish was born in Washington, D.C. in 1972. He grew up in Chicago, Illinois, listening to Miles Davis, Nina Simone, and George Gershwin. He studied at the Chicago Academy of the Arts and the Kansas City Art Institute. While at KCAI, he concentrated on sound sculptures, creating sonic pieces by combining live instruments, human voices, and looped recordings. In 1994, he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. After graduating, Parrish moved to Detroit and became involved in the city's music scene, eventually releasing the track "Lake Shore Drive" as a B-side to a Moodymann 12" in 1995. A supergroup is a musical group whose members are successful as solo artists or as members of other successful groups. The term became popular in the late 1960s when members of already successful rock groups recorded albums together, after which they normally disband. 12-inch Single
The twelve-inch single (often written as 12-inch or 12″) is a type of vinyl ( polyvinyl chloride or PVC) gramophone record that has wider groove spacing and shorter playing time with a 'single' or a few related sound tracks on each surface, compared to LPs (long play) which have several songs on each side. This allows for louder levels to be cut on the disc by the mastering engineer, which in turn gives a wider dynamic range, and thus better sound quality. Norma Jean Bell
Peacefrog Records is a British independent record label based in London, England. The label produces releases in many different styles of electronic music, as well as branching out into folk and indie artists such as José González, Nouvelle Vague and Little Dragon. The label was started by Pete Hutchison and Paul Ballard in 1991. After the Lodger 303 EP, Ballard withdrew from Peacefrog Records. The record label subsequently released a number of techno records, by artists including Luke Slater, Moodymann and Suburban Knight. The label has built up a following over the years, increased by the mainstream success of José González and has become synonymous for synching many of its recently signed artists music to film and television. Joseph Anthony "Amp" Fiddler is an American singer, songwriter, keyboardist, and record producer from Detroit, Michigan. His musical styles include funk, soul, dance and electronica music. He is probably best known for his contributions to the band Enchantment, and as part of George Clinton's Parliament and Funkadelic groups from 1985 until 1996. His first solo album ''Waltz of a Ghetto Fly'' was released in March 2004. His most recent album, ''Amp Dog Knights'', was released in 2017.
