2024 North Sumatra Gubernatorial Election
A gubernatorial election was held in North Sumatra on 27 November 2024 alongside 2024 Indonesian local elections, other local elections nationwide to elect the Governor of North Sumatra, governor and vice governor for a five-year term. Medan Mayor Bobby Nasution of the Gerindra Party won the election in a landslide with 64% of the vote. He defeated former Governor Edy Rahmayadi of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), who received 35%. Electoral system The election, like other local elections in 2024, follow the First-past-the-post voting, first-past-the-post system where the candidate with the most votes wins the election, even if they do not win a majority. It is possible for a candidate to run Uncontested election, uncontested, in which case the candidate is still required to win a majority of votes "against" an "None of the above, empty box" option. Bobby Nasution
Muhammad Bobby Afif Nasution (born 5 July 1991) is an Indonesian businessman and politician currently serving as the governor of North Sumatra. He was previously Medan's mayor between 2021 and 2025. He is the son-in-law of former President Joko Widodo. Early life and education Nasution was born on 5 July 1991 in Medan, North Sumatra, as the youngest of three siblings in a Batak Mandailing family. His father Erwin Nasution had been the president and director of the state-owned plantation company PTPN IV.
