2024 California Wildfires
By the end of 2024, a total of 8,024 wildfires burned a cumulative throughout the U.S. state of California. The total number of wildfires was slightly higher than the five-year average, while the total number of acres burned was lower. Wildfires destroyed a total of 1,716 structures and killed one person in the state in 2024. This season had the most burned acres since the 2021 California wildfires, 2021 wildfire season. Background The timing of "fire season" in California is variable, depending on the amount of prior winter and spring precipitation, the frequency and severity of weather such as heat waves and wind events, and moisture content in vegetation. Tracy is the second most populated city in San Joaquin County, California, United States. The population was 93,000 at the 2020 census. Tracy is located inside a geographic triangle formed by Interstate 205 on the north side of the city, Interstate 5 to the east, and Interstate 580 to the southwest. Corral Fire (2024)
The Corral Fire was a sizeable wildfire that rapidly burned 14,168 acres across San Joaquin County in the U.S. state of California. It was active from June 1 to June 6, 2024, and was 100% contained as of August 2024. It was the first fire of the 2024 California wildfire season to burn more than 2,000 acres, and was the largest wildfire of the season until the Post Fire began 9 days after the Corral Fire was declared contained. The burn area contained Site 300, the only known remaining occurrence of large-flowered fiddleneck in the wild. Progression The fire started at approximately 4:30 p.m., and had grown to 30 acres in size 14 minutes later, when it was first reported. Camp Roberts, California
Camp Roberts is a California National Guard post in central California, located on both sides of the Salinas River in Monterey and San Luis Obispo counties, now run by the California Army National Guard. Franklin Fire
The Franklin Fire was a damaging wildfire that began in Los Angeles County, California during the 2024 California wildfire season. Progression The fire ignited north of Pepperdine University, on Malibu Canyon Road, at approximately 11 p.m. on December 9, 2024. The fire had reached about at around 1:00 a.m. and ran towards Pepperdine University, reaching over by December 11. By December 15, the fire had reached 49% containment with minimal activity reported, and the fire reached full containment on December 18.
