2023 Polaris Music Prize
The 2023 edition of the Canada, Canadian Polaris Music Prize was presented on September 19, 2023. The winner was electronic musician Debby Friday for her album ''Good Luck (Debby Friday album), Good Luck''. The longlist was announced on June 13, and the shortlist was released July 13. Debby Friday
Debby Friday is an Electronic music, electronic musician based in Toronto. Her debut album, ''Good Luck (Debby Friday album), Good Luck'', released on Sub Pop in 2023, won the 2023 Polaris Music Prize, Polaris Music Prize. Early life Friday was born in Nigeria, and raised in Montreal. In 2018, she moved from Montreal to Vancouver. Career She released her first EP, ''Bitchpunk'', in 2018. Gayance
Aïsha Vertus, known professionally as Gayance (pronounced guy-ence), is a Canadian house and electronic music producer and DJ born and raised in Montreal, Quebec. Vertus grew up in Montreal-Nord, a multicultural neighborhood in Quebec. Her album ''Mascarade'' was shortlisted for the 2023 Polaris Music Prize. Early life Gayance is of Haitian descent. She is a direct descendent of former Haitian president Jean-Nicolas Nissage Saget on her paternal grandmother's side. Vertus is fluent in French, English, Haitian Creole and Brazilian Portuguese. Mariel Buckley
Mariel Buckley is a Canadian country music singer-songwriter based in Calgary, Alberta. She is the younger sister of singer T. Buckley. Biography Buckley was born in Calgary, Alberta. Buckley recorded an EP in 2012, and her first album, ''Motorhome'', in 2014. The album was produced by Derek Pulliam, and featured mainly acoustic music. Buckley was accompanied by a string trio with Charlie Hase on pedal steel, Scott Duncan on fiddle, and Pulliam on bass. Buckley was a finalist in the 2014 All-Alberta Songwriting Contest. Philippe Brach
Philippe Brach is the stage name of Philippe Bouchard (born July 22, 1989), a Canadian singer-songwriter from Saguenay, Quebec. Launching his music career in 2012, he was the winner of the Francouvertes festival in 2014. Several weeks later, he released his debut album ''La foire et l'ordre''. Big Brave
Big Brave (stylized as BIG , BRAVE) is a Canadian heavy, experimental band formed in 2012 in Montreal. The members are guitarist/vocalist Robin Wattie, guitarist Mathieu Ball, and drummer Tasy Hudson. While Wattie and Ball are original members, having played together as an acoustic, folk oriented duo before forming Big Brave, Hudson joined them in 2019, replacing original drummer Louis-Alexandre Beauregard. Loel Campbell appears on A Gaze Among Them as a hired drummer. Big Brave have released seven studio albums, the latest being 2024's '' A Chaos of Flowers'' and one collaborative album with The Body in 2021, ''Leaving None but Small Birds.'' Badge Époque Ensemble is a Canadian musical project led by Max Turnbull. They are most noted for their self-titled debut album, which was a longlisted nominee for the 2020 Polaris Music Prize. Aquakultre
Aquakultre is a Canadian soul and R&B musical project from Halifax, Nova Scotia, whose core member is singer and rapper Lance Sampson. Formed in 2015, they are most noted for their album ''Legacy'', which was a longlisted nominee for the 2020 Polaris Music Prize. Background Sampson's ancestors are from Africville, and he grew up in the Uniacke Square neighbourhood of Halifax. He was a troubled teenager, who spent some time trafficking drugs and received a five-year prison sentence as a teenager. After being exposed to the music of Common and Erykah Badu, he taught himself to play guitar, and was released from prison after just 19 months for good behaviour.
