2023 New Zealand NBL Season
The 2023 NBL season was the 42nd season of the National Basketball League. For the third year in a row, the league fielded 10 teams. The regular season commenced on 6 April in Pukekohe, with the Franklin Bulls hosting the Hawke's Bay Hawks at Franklin Pool and Leisure Centre, and contained 15 weeks followed by a four-day finals schedule in July. National Basketball League (New Zealand)
The National Basketball League (NBL) is a men's semi-professional basketball league in New Zealand. In 1981, a group of club and provincial teams came together to create a men's national basketball league. The following year, the league was brought under the management of the New Zealand Basketball Federation. The league quickly grew in size and popularity due to the influx of sponsors and American import players. The early 1990s held dwindling fortunes for New Zealand basketball, with reduced TV coverage, sponsorships, and crowd numbers. The sport's popularity increased in the 2000s with the success of the Tall Blacks and the introduction of the New Zealand Breakers in the Australian NBL. Rickey McGill
Rickey Isiah Justin McGill Jr. (born June 19, 1997) is an American professional basketball player for the Newcastle Eagles of the British Basketball League (BBL). He played college basketball for the Iona Gaels. High school career McGill attended Spring Valley High School. He helped lead Spring Valley to a 23-2 record during his senior season and an appearance in the state final four, earning Section 1's Mr. Basketball honors. McGill averaged 23.3 points per game. In the Class A regional final against Saugerties High School, McGill hit the game-winning buzzer-beating three-pointer and finished with 21 points and four assists. He finished second on Rockland County's all-time scoring list with 1,463 points. Matur Maker
Matur Marial Maker (born 1 January 1998) is a South Sudanese-born Australian basketball player who last played for the Canterbury Rams of the New Zealand National Basketball League (NZNBL). He moved to Australia in his childhood and played for various prep schools in Canada and the United States, before forgoing college basketball. He is the younger brother of NBA player Thon Maker and the cousin of basketball player Makur Maker. Early life Maker was born in what is now known as South Sudan on 1 January 1998 with his older brother Thon Maker. In Matur's early childhood, his uncle, a local administrator, helped the family flee to Uganda amid a civil war in their home country. Michael Fitchett (basketball)
Michael Robert Elmslie Fitchett (born 20 September 1982) is a New Zealand former professional basketball player. He attended Nelson College from 1996 to 2000, where he excelled as a sportsman. He was the school's junior athletics champion in 1996 and 1997, played for the 'A' basketball team from 1996 to 2000, and was a member of the 1st XI cricket team from 1996 to 2000. He played in the New Zealand NBL every year between 1999 and 2012. He also played one game in the Australian NBL with the New Zealand Breakers in January 2009. Trafalgar Centre
The Trafalgar Centre is a multipurpose events centre located in Nelson, New Zealand. The stadium was built in 1972 and opened in 1973. The main stadium holds up to 2,460 people. It can be used as two tennis courts or four basketball courts. Tenants The Nelson Giants use the Trafalgar Centre for their home games. The stadium is nicknamed 'The Hangar' by loyal Giants fans. WDF World Cup In 1981, the WDF World Cup was held at Trafalgar Centre. It was only the third ever WDF World Cup and the only one ever to be held in New Zealand. England won the overall event. Nelson Giants
The Nelson Giants are a New Zealand basketball team based in Nelson. The Giants compete in the National Basketball League (NBL) and play their home games at the Trafalgar Centre. For sponsorship reasons, they are known as the Mike Pero Nelson Giants. The Giants are the only remaining original team from the league's inaugural season, as all other teams have spent at least one year out of the league, for various reasons. Danny Pippen
Daniel Pippen (born November 12, 1997) is an American professional basketball player for Kobrat of the Finnish Korisliiga. He played college basketball for the Kent State Golden Flashes. High school career Pippen attended Allen Academy in Detroit, Michigan and played alongside Rocket Watts. As a junior, he averaged 16 points and eight rebounds per game. Mustapha Jahhad Heron (born December 12, 1997) is an American professional basketball player for the Manawatu Jets of the New Zealand National Basketball League (NZNBL). He played college basketball for the Auburn Tigers and the St. John's Red Storm.
