2023 Italian By-elections
One by-election was held in Italy in 2023. The election was held at the same time as the 2023 Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol provincial elections and Foggia's local elections. List Senate Lombardy 06: Monza A by-election was held in the constituency of Monza on 22 and 23 October 2023 to replace Senate of the Republic (Italy), senator and former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi (Forza Italia (2013), Forza Italia), who died of leukemia on 12 June 2023. Forza Italia member Adriano Galliani won the election with 51.46% of the votes. His main opponent in the election, right-to-die activist Marco Cappato, conceded defeat. By-election
A by-election, also known as a special election in the United States and the Philippines, or a bypoll in India, is an election used to fill an office that has become vacant between general elections. A vacancy may arise as a result of an incumbent’s death or resignation, or when the incumbent becomes ineligible to continue in office (because of a recall, a prohibited dual mandate, criminal conviction, or failure to maintain a minimum attendance), or when an election is invalidated by voting irregularities. In some cases a vacancy may be filled by a method other than a by-election (such as the outgoing member's party nominating a replacement) or the office may be left vacant. These elections can be held anytime in the country. Action (Italian Political Party)
Action (, abbr. A or Az) is a Liberalism, liberal political party in Italy, political party in Italy. Its founder and leader is Carlo Calenda. Originally launched as We Are Europeans (, SE), it adopted its current name in November 2019 upon becoming a fully-fledged party. Calenda has described his party as "anti-Populism, populist" and "anti-Sovereigntism, souverainist". He also explained that the party's name is a historical reference to the short-lived post-World War II Action Party (Italy), Action Party and an allusion to Carlo Rosselli's "liberal socialism". Italian Communist Party (2016)
The Italian Communist Party (, PCI) is a minor communist party in Italy. History The PCI, which took the name from the historical and much larger Italian Communist Party, active from 1921 to 1991, emerged from the merger of the Communist Party of Italy (PCdI) with splinters from the Communist Refoundation Party (PRC) and minor groups in 2016. The foundation of the new PCI took place ninety years after the transformation of the old Communist Party of Italy into the old PCI. After the founding congress, Mauro Alboresi was elected secretary by the party's newly formed national committee. The People's Union (, UP) was a left-wing political alliance in Italy launched on 9 July 2022 by Luigi de Magistris. Cateno De Luca
Cateno Roberto Salvatore De Luca (born 18 March 1972) is an Italian politician who has been the mayor of Messina from 2018 to 2022 and the mayor of Taormina since 2023. He was also the mayor of Fiumedinisi, his hometown, from 2003 to 2011 and of Santa Teresa di Riva from 2012 to 2017. De Luca began his career at the age of 18 in Christian Democracy (DC), the ruling party of post-war Italy. Italian Left (, SI) is a left-wing political party in Italy. SI was launched in November 2015 as a parliamentary group in the Chamber of Deputies (full name: Italian Left – Left Ecology Freedom), including Left Ecology Freedom (SEL), dissidents from the Democratic Party like Future to the Left, and splinters from the Five Star Movement. At its launch, SI included 32 deputies, who were soon followed by eight senators (who formed a sub-group within the Mixed Group of the Senate in February 2016), and two MEPs. Possible (, Pos) is a left-wing political party in Italy, launched in Rome on 21 June 2015. The party's founder is Giuseppe Civati, a former prominent member of the Democratic Party (PD). Possible's progressive platform is a mixture of social democracy, democratic socialism, green politics, feminism and elements of participatory democracy. Five Star Movement
The Five Star Movement ( , M5S) is a political party in Italy, led by Giuseppe Conte. It was launched on 4 October 2009 by Beppe Grillo, a political activist and comedian, and Gianroberto Casaleggio, a web strategist. The party is primarily described as populist of the syncretic kind, due to its long-time indifference to the left–right political spectrum. The party has been a proponent of green politics and direct democracy, as well as progressivism, social democracy and left-wing populism.
