2023 Fitzgibbon Cup
The 2023 Fitzgibbon Cup was the 106th staging of the Fitzgibbon Cup since its establishment by the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1912. It is sponsored by Electric Ireland, and known as the Electric Ireland HE GAA Fitzgibbon Cup for sponsorship purposes. The draw for the group stage fixtures took place on 14 December 2022. The cup ran from 18 January to 18 February 2023. University of Limerick were the defending champions. The Fitzgibbon Cup final was played on 18 February 2023 at the SETU Waterford Complex, between University of Limerick and University of Galway, in what was their second consecutive meeting in the final. University of Limerick won the match by 4-19 to 1-13 to claim their eighth Fitzgibbon Cup title overall and a second title in succession. South East Technological University (SETU; ga, Ollscoil Teicneolaíochta an Oirdheiscirt) is a public technological university located in the South East region of Ireland. It was formed from the amalgamation of two existing institutes of technology in the region - Waterford IT and IT Carlow. Michael Kiely (born 2001) is an Irish hurler who plays for Waterford SHC club Abbeyside and at inter-county level with the Waterford senior hurling team. He usually lines out as a forward. Career Kiely played at juvenile and underage levels with Abbeyside before progressing onto the club's senior team. He was a member of the University of Limerick team that won the 2022 Fitzgibbon Cup. Darragh Flynn (born 2002) is an Irish hurler who plays for Cork Intermediate Championship club Ballygiblin. He also joined the Cork senior hurling team in advance of the 2022 season. Career Flynn played hurling competitively at juvenile and underage levels with the Ballygiblin club. He later progressed onto the club's top adult team and won a County Junior A Championship title in 2021. By this stage Flynn was a member of the Cork minor hurling team during the 2019 Munster Minor Championship. He later won consecutive All-Ireland Under-20 Championship titles with the under-20 team. Flynn's performances in this grade earned a call-up to the senior team training panel in December 2021. Reuben Halloran (born in 2002) is an Irish hurler. At college level he plays for SETU Waterford, at club level he plays with De La Salle and at inter-county level with the Waterford senior hurling team. He usually lines out as a forward. Career Halloran first played hurling at juvenile and underage levels with the De La Salle club, while also playing as a schoolboy with the De La Salle College in the Harty Cup. He scored all 1-14 of De La Salle's tally when they beat Ballygunner to claim the Waterford U20AHC title. Halloran has also lined out with SETU Waterford in the Fitzgibbon Cup. Gearóid O’Connor (born 2000) is an Irish hurler. At club level he plays with Moyne-Templetuohy and at inter-county level with the Tipperary senior hurling team. O'Connor usually lines out as a forwards. Career O'Connor first played hurling at juvenile and underage levels with various Moyne-Templetuohy teams before eventually progressing to adult level. He was top scorer with 1-12 when Moyne-Templetuohy beat Kilsheelan–Kilcash to win the Tipperary IHC title in 2021. St Joseph's, Doora-Barefield is a Gaelic Athletic Association club in the parish of Doora-Barefield outside Ennis, County Clare, Ireland. Hurling was the more popular sport in Barefield over Gaelic football, now it's 50-50 between the both of them. Their main playing fields are in Gurteen. Mardyke (UCC)
The Mardyke, also referred as the Mardyke Sports Ground, is the sport and fitness facilities used by sports team representing University College Cork, the general student body, and members of the public. It is based in the Cork district of Mardyke. UCC acquired the grounds in 1911, and rented the main pitch to rugby, soccer, hockey and hurling clubs in the city for a 15% cut of the gate receipts. Outdoors, there are floodlit grass and all-weather pitches, used for soccer, rugby, Gaelic games, and hockey. Kayakers train in the adjacent North channel of the River Lee. There is a tartan track for athletics, where the Cork City Sports are held annually.
