2023 Chicago Marathon
The 2023 Chicago Marathon was the 45th edition of the Chicago Marathon, annual marathon race in Chicago, held on Sunday, . A World Athletics Label Road Races, Platinum Label marathon, it was the fifth of six World Marathon Majors events that were held in 2023. The race also hosted the age group world championships for the year. Kenyan runner Kelvin Kiptum set a new marathon world record progression, marathon world record, winning the race with a time of 2:00:35, and beating the previous world record of 2:01:09, set by his compatriot Eliud Kipchoge at the 2022 Berlin Marathon, by 34 seconds. Kiptum broke free from all the other runners by the mark, and finished the race with a significant negative split. Kelvin Kiptum
Kelvin Kiptum (born 2 December 1999) is a Kenyan long-distance runner. He ran the fastest ever marathon debut at the 2022 Valencia Marathon, becoming just the third man in history to break two hours and two minutes. Career Kiptum gained his first international experience in March 2019 when finishing fifth at the Lisbon Half Marathon (59:54). In December 2020, he set new personal best in the event of 58:42, placing sixth at the Valencia Half Marathon. In 2021, he ran 59:35 and 59:02 half marathons in Lens, France (first) and Valencia (eighth) respectively. On 4 December 2022, the 23-year-old pulled off an upset when debuting in the marathon at the Valencia Marathon. Super shoes or carbon-plated shoes are a type of lightweight running shoe incorporating carbon fiber plates and thick foam soles. They are typically used in long-distance running, including trail running and marathons. Since their introduction on the road in 2016, and more recently on the track in 2019, super shoes have coincided with a series of record-breaking times in middle to long-distance running events. Ruth Chepng'etich, often spelt Ruth Chepngetich, (born 8 August 1994) is a Kenyan Road running, road racing athlete, who competes in the marathon and other long-distance running, long distance events. She was the 2019 World Athletics Championships – Women's marathon, 2019 Marathon World champion in hot and humid conditions. 2002 London Marathon
The 2002 London Marathon was the 22nd running of the annual marathon race in London, United Kingdom, which took place on Sunday, 14 April. The elite men's race was won by Khalid Khannouchi of the United States in a time of 2:05:38 hours and the women's race was won by home athlete Paula Radcliffe in 2:18:56. Khannouchi's time was a marathon world record, improving on his own record by four seconds. Radcliffe was also close to a world record, just nine seconds off the time set by Catherine Ndereba the previous year. In the wheelchair races, Britain's David Weir (1:39:44) and Britain's Tanni Grey-Thompson (2:22:51) won the men's and women's divisions, respectively - with Grey-Thompson winning for the sixth time. Around 99,000 people applied to enter the race, of which 46,083 had their applications accepted and 33,297 started the race. Khalid Khannouchi
Khalid Khannouchi ( ar, خالد خنّوشي) (born September 12, 1971) is a retired American marathoner. He was born in Meknes, Morocco. He is the former world record holder for the marathon and held the former road world best for the 20 km distance. He is one of only five men to break the marathon world record more than once, and one of only five to break their own marathon world record (the others are Jim Peters, Derek Clayton, Eliud Kipchoge, and Haile Gebrselassie). Khalid fell out with the Moroccan athletics federation over training expenses and moved to Brooklyn, New York City in 1992 with three of his friends. He married American Sandra Inoa in 1996, who now coaches him and acts as his agent. They set up home in Ossining, New York. The 1999 Chicago Marathon was the 22nd running of the annual marathon race in Chicago, United States and was held on October 24. The elite men's race was won by Morocco's Khalid Khannouchi in a time of 2:05:42 hours and the women's race was won by Kenya's Joyce Chepchumba in 2:25:59. Tigst Assefa Tessema (; born 3 December 1996) is an Ethiopian long-distance runner and the world record holder in the women's marathon. She has competed in and won two top-tier World Marathon Majors, both in Berlin. A former 800 metres specialist, Tigst switched to road races in 2018 and ran her first marathon in 2022. At the age of 16, she won the bronze medal in the 800 m at the 2013 African Junior Championships. She finished fourth at the senior African Championships the following year, and then represented Ethiopia in the event at the 2016 Rio Olympics aged 19. Brigid Jepchirchir Kosgei (born 20 February 1994) is a Kenyan long-distance runner who specialises in the marathon. She won the 2018 and 2019 Chicago Marathons, the 2019 and 2020 London Marathons and the 2021 Tokyo Marathon. Kosgei is the current marathon world record holder for women running in a mixed-sex race, with a time of 2:14:04 achieved on 13 October 2019 at the Chicago Marathon. The 2019 Chicago Marathon was the 42nd annual running of the Chicago Marathon held in Chicago, Illinois, United States on October 13, 2019. The 1977 Chicago Marathon was the first running of the annual marathon race in Chicago, United States and was held on September 25. The elite men's and women's races were won by Americans Dan Cloeter (2:17:52 hours) and Dorothy Doolittle (2:50:47). A total of 2128 runners finished the race.
