Ruth Chepng'etich (often spelled Ruth Chepngetich, born 8 August 1994) is a Kenyan Road running, road runner who is the current women's world record holder in the marathon, with a time of 2:09:56 set at the 2024 Chicago Marathon. She is the 2019 World Athletics Championships – Women's marathon, 2019 world champion in the marathon, and is a three time winner of the Chicago Marathon, having won in 2021 Chicago Marathon, 2021, 2022 Chicago Marathon, 2022 and 2024, where she set the world record. 2021 Chicago Marathon
The 2021 Chicago Marathon was held on October 10, 2021. It was the 43rd edition of the annual Chicago Marathon, and the first after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019. The 2020 Chicago Marathon was canceled as a result of the pandemic. The race was the third of five World Marathon Majors scheduled for 2021; all the events in the series took place in the span of six weeks between late September and early November. Participants were required to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccine, COVID-19 vaccination or a COVID-19 testing, negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of attending the event. 2024 Chicago Marathon
The 2024 Chicago Marathon was the 46th edition of the annual Chicago Marathon, held on October 13, 2024. The race is the fifth of six World Marathon Majors held in 2024, and is a platinum label race. The marathon had 120,000 applications in 2024. The number of finishers was 52,150, breaking the 48,398 finisher record set in 2023. Notably, in June, the race organizers announced a reduction in the automatic time qualifying standard that will begin in 2025. Ababel Yeshaneh Birhane (born 22 July 1991) is an Ethiopian long-distance runner who competes in track, road and cross country events. She represented her country in the 10,000 metres at the 2013 World Championships in Athletics, coming ninth, and ranked fifth in the world on time that year. She was a team silver medallist at the African Cross Country Championships in 2014 and finished 14th in the 5000 metres at the 2016 Olympic Games. Helalia Lukeiko Johannes (born 13 August 1980), also known as Hilaria Johannes, is a Namibian long-distance runner who specializes in the marathon. She holds the Namibian records in the 10 km, 20 km, half marathon and marathon events. At 39 years of age, she became a World Championships bronze medallist in the marathon. Rose Chelimo (born 12 July 1989) is a Kenyan-born Bahraini long-distance runner who competes in road running events up to the marathon distance. She is the 2017 IAAF world champion. She represented Bahrain at the 2016 Summer Olympics, placing eighth in the women's marathon. Chelimo started competing in professional European road races in 2010. In France that year she was runner-up at the Paris-Versailles and won the 20K de Paris and Grand Nancy Half Marathon. The following year she won the Lac d'Annecy Half Marathon. World Athletics Label Road Races are races that World Athletics (until 2019: ''IAAF'') designates as the "leading road races around the world." The classification was first introduced for the 2008 running season, upon the suggestion of the IAAF Road Running Commission. The races are split into three categories: marathons, half marathons and other. Within the "other" category are traditional road race distances, over which World Athletics world records can be set, along with some "Classical races", which span unusual distances.
