2021 California State Assembly 79th District Special Election
The 2021 California's 79th State Assembly district special election was held on April 6, 2021. Democratic Party (United States), Democratic nominee Akilah Weber defeated Republican Party (United States), Republican nominee Marco Contreras and three other Democratic candidates to succeed Shirley Weber in the California State Assembly. Weber, who had served in the state assembly since her election in 2012 California State Assembly election, 2012, was appointed to serve as Secretary of State of California. Governor Gavin Newsom called a special election which was won by Weber's daughter in the primary without the need of the second top-two election. Devon Mathis
Devon John Mathis (born September 21, 1982) is an American politician serving as a member of the California State Assembly from the newly drawn 33rd District, which is located in Kings County, western Tulare County, and a small part of southern Fresno County. He serves as the Republican Whip for the California State Assembly Republican Caucus. Early life and education Mathis was born in Porterville, California. He earned an Associate of Arts degree in Social Sciences from Porterville College and Bachelor of Arts in Public Administration from California State University, Fresno. Shirley Horton
Shirley Grasser Horton (July 17, 1952) is a Japanese–American politician who served as the 37th mayor of Chula Vista, California, and in the California State Assembly as a member of the Republican Party. Horton was born in Japan and educated in California at Bonita Vista High School and San Diego State University. In the 1980s she served as the president of the South San Diego Bay Cities Board of Realtors before becoming active in local politics in Chula Vista when she was appointed to the city's planning commission. In 1991, she was selected to fill Tim Nader's seat and was later elected mayor in 1994.
