2019 Lombok Earthquake
On 17 March 2019, an earthquake measuring 5.6 struck the island of Lombok in West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. The earthquake triggered a landslide, killing six and injuring nearly 200 others. Earthquake The earthquake has its epicenter in East Lombok Regency, with a reported magnitude and depth of 5.6 and according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), while the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) reported a magnitude of 5.4 and a depth of . BMKG attributed the earthquake to a local fault in the vicinity of Mount Rinjani. Aftershocks exceeding 5.0 were recorded. Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita (born 3 January 1969) is an Indonesian politician. He is the current Minister of Industry in the Republic of Indonesia, appointed on 24 August 2019. Early life, and education Agus Kartasasmita was born on 3 January 1969 in Jakarta, Indonesia. His father is Ginandjar Kartasasmita a former Speaker of Indonesia Regional Representative Council. Kartasasmita attended Canisius High School in 1984 and left in 1985 to Knox High School in New York. July 2018 Lombok Earthquake
A Mw 6.4 earthquake struck the island of Lombok on the morning of 29 July 2018 at a shallow depth of . Widespread damage was reported in the area, and authorities confirmed that 20 people were killed in the earthquake while hundreds were injured. The epicentre was located in Sembalun Subdistrict, East Lombok Regency. The earthquake was a foreshock to the larger 6.9 earthquake which struck the island a week later. Tectonic setting Lombok lies on the destructive plate boundary between the Australian Plate and the Sunda Plate. To the east of Bali the plate boundary starts to involve a collision between the leading edge of the Australian continent and the eastern part of the Sunda Arc and the western end of the Banda Arc. In response to this collision, the arc itself has begun to be pushed over the back-arc Bali Basin along a major thrust fault, the long Flores Thrust. 19 August 2018 Lombok Earthquake
On 19 August 2018 a major earthquake struck with high intensity on the northeast corner of Lombok (Sambelia and Labuhan Lombok settlements) and northwest Sumbawa (Poto Tano settlement) at 22:56 local time, a few km to the east of the series of quakes that had been rocking the area for the past 3 weeks. It was measured at 6.9 (USGS), at a depth of 25.6 km. The Indonesian BMKG announced that it was a new major earthquake and it was not an aftershock. The earthquake occurred on the same overall structure, the Flores Back Arc Thrust Fault, however according to scientists it happened on a different thrust fault as there are many individual structures within the belt. There were 14 deaths and 1800 homes have been damaged, half severely, due to this event, including deaths on Sumbawa, following 2 deaths from the previous Lombok quake roughly 24 hours earlier. 5 August 2018 Lombok Earthquake
On 5 August 2018, a destructive and shallow earthquake measuring Mw 6.9 ( according to BMKG) struck the island of Lombok, Indonesia. It was the main shock following its foreshock, a nearby 6.4 earthquake on 29 July. It was followed by a nearby 6.9 earthquake on 19 August 2018. The epicentre was located inland, near Loloan Village in North Lombok Regency. The fault rupture spread to the north and reached the sea, creating tsunamis. Severe shaking was reported throughout the entire island, while strong shaking was reported on the neighboring islands of Bali and Sumbawa. Widespread damage was reported in Lombok and Bali. Officials stated that at least 80% of structures in North Lombok were damaged or destroyed.
