2019 European Parliament Election In Friuli-Venezia Giulia
The 2019 European Parliament election in Italy took place in Italy on 26 May 2019. In Friuli-Venezia Giulia Lega Nord came first with 42.6% of the vote (country-level result 34.3%) and more than 20pp than the Democratic Party, which came second with 22.2%. The Five Star Movement came third with 9.6%, ahead of Brothers of Italy (7.6%), Forza Italia (6.7%), More Europe (3.0%), Green Europe (3.0%) and The Left (1.6%). The South Tyrolean People's Party, which included one candidate from the Slovene Union, reached 38.9% in San Floriano del Collio. The 2019 European Parliament election in Italy were held on 26 May 2019, electing members of the 9th Italian delegation to the European Parliament as part of the European elections held across the European Union. Background In 2014, the governing Democratic Party (PD) of Prime Minister Matteo Renzi won the election with 40.8% of the vote and 31 seats, followed by the Five Star Movement (M5S) with 21.2% and 17 seats and Forza Italia (FI) with 16.8% and 13 seats. As a result, the PD was the second largest national party in the European Parliament by number of seats after the German CDU/CSU and the largest among the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D). Five Star Movement
The Five Star Movement ( , M5S) is a political party in Italy, led by Giuseppe Conte. It was launched on 4 October 2009 by Beppe Grillo, a political activist and comedian, and Gianroberto Casaleggio, a web strategist. The party is primarily described as populist of the syncretic kind, due to its long-time indifference to the left–right political spectrum. The party has been a proponent of green politics and direct democracy, as well as progressivism, social democracy and left-wing populism. During an online vote held in November 2024, party members decided to identify as "independent progressives".
