Västerbotten County ( sv, Västerbottens län) is a county or '' län'' in the north of Sweden. It shares the borders with the counties of Västernorrland, Jämtland, and Norrbotten, as well as the Norwegian county of Nordland and the Gulf of Bothnia. Its capital is Umeå that houses about half of the population when combined together with the largest town in the northern part Skellefteå. The two municipalities themselves are making up the majority of the population. Dorotea Municipality
Dorotea Municipality (; sma, Kraapohken tjïelte) is a municipality in Västerbotten County in northern Sweden. Its seat is located in Dorotea. When the first local government acts were implemented in Sweden in 1863 Dorotea parish was made a rural municipality. In 1974 it was merged into Åsele Municipality. Already in 1980 it was split off, forming a new Dorotea Municipality. It is the third least populated municipality of Sweden. Locality There is only one locality (or urban area) in Dorotea Municipality: Economy Amongst the industries in the municipality is one of the biggest caravan manufacturers in Scandinavia, ''Polarvagnen'', now known as ''SoliferPolar'' as it has merged with Solifer. Ã…sele Municipality
Åsele Municipality () is a municipality in Västerbotten County in northern Sweden. Its seat is located in the town of Åsele. It is located in the southernmost fringe of Lapland. History The first Swedish settlement in Åsele Municipality (it was already inhabited by the native Sami people) was in Gafsele south of Åsele. The settlers were Nils Andersson and his wife Brita. They came from Finland in 1674, trying to avoid the war with Russia. Fredrika is a parish in the municipality. It was created in 1799 and named in honour of Queen Frederica Dorothea Wilhelmina of Sweden. Other nearby parishes were named Dorotea and Vilhelmina, but Åsele refused to take any of these names, as they were proud of themselves and the town. Vännäs Municipality
Vännäs Municipality () is a municipality in Västerbotten County in northern Sweden. Its seat is located in Vännäs. History In 1928 the locality Vännäs was detached from the rural municipality with the same name, forming the market town (''köping'') of Vännäs. The two entities were reunited in 1971. In 1974 Bjurholm Municipality was added. A split took place in 1980 when Bjurholm Municipality was re-established. Geography The municipality is located just west of Umeå Municipality, where Umeå is the seat, with about 110,000 inhabitants, and it is part of the Umeå region. This is evident considering that the municipality has 1,500 people commuting ''to'' Umeå Municipality and about 400 commuters ''from'' Umeå Municipality. Vindeln Municipality
Vindeln Municipality () is a municipality in Västerbotten County in northern Sweden. Its seat is located in Vindeln. History In 1971 a local government reform was implemented in Sweden. This municipality was, however, not amalgamated with any other. But in preparation for the reform the name was changed in 1969 from Degerfors Municipality to Vindeln Municipality. The reason was that there is another Degerfors Municipality (in Örebro County), and every municipality in Sweden should have a unique name. Geography The Vindel River, which is the main tributary of the Ume River, runs through the municipality and has given it its name. Vilhelmina Municipality (; sma, Vualtjeren tjïelte) is a municipality in Västerbotten County in northern Sweden. Its seat is located in Vilhelmina. History In 1804 the parish of Volgsjö was renamed Vilhelmina in honour of Queen Frederica Dorothea Wilhelmina of Sweden. In 1947 the locality Vilhelmina was detached from the rural municipality with the same name, forming the market town (''köping'') of Vilhelmina. The two entities were reunited in 1965. Geography Like the rest of northern Sweden (''Norrland''), it is scarcely populated due to its inhospitable conditions and cold climate, but is superb for those who like wildlife and untouched nature. Storuman Municipality
Storuman Municipality (; sma, Luspie tjïelte; sju, Lusspie kommuvnna) is a municipality in Västerbotten County in northern Sweden. Its seat is located in Storuman. The parish Stensele was created as late as 1822. It was, together with the parish Tärna, made into a municipality in 1863. In 1903 Tärna was detached to form a municipality of its own. The local government reform of 1971 saw the reunification of Stensele and Tärnaby municipalities, thus forming Storuman Municipality with the name taken from its largest town.
