Storuman Municipality
Storuman Municipality (; sma, Luspie tjïelte; sju, Lusspie kommuvnna) is a municipality in Västerbotten County in northern Sweden. Its seat is located in Storuman. The parish Stensele was created as late as 1822. It was, together with the parish Tärna, made into a municipality in 1863. In 1903 Tärna was detached to form a municipality of its own. The local government reform of 1971 saw the reunification of Stensele and Tärnaby municipalities, thus forming Storuman Municipality with the name taken from its largest town. Tärnaby, a small village in the municipality, has fostered the internationally famous alpine skiers Ingemar Stenmark, Stig Strand and Anja Pärson. Geography With an area of , the municipality has Sweden's ninth largest area, but is sparsely populated with a population density of less than 1 inhabitant per km2. The Inland Line ( sv, Inlandsbanan) is a railway line between Kristinehamn and Gällivare in Sweden. It runs through the central parts of northern Sweden, and was built between 1908 and 1937. History There were several reasons for constructing the railway. The original main line to the north of Sweden ran relatively near the east coast, but inland connections were poor to non-existent; the inland regions, rich in natural resources (mainly timber) needed opening up. However, there was a strategic aspect to be considered; should Sweden be invaded from the east (which at the time was a serious possibility) the belligerents would certainly try to cut the main line to the north as quickly as possible; thus a second reserve route further inland was deemed highly important. European Route E12
European route E12 is a road that is part of the International E-road network. It begins in Mo i Rana, Norway, transverses Sweden and ends in Helsinki, Finland, with a ferry line between Sweden and Finland. The part within Finland is Finnish national highway 3. The road is about 910 km (570 mi) in length. The road follows the route: Mo i Rana – Storuman, Sweden – Lycksele, Sweden – Umeå, Sweden – Holmsund, Sweden – ''(ferry)'' – Vaasa, Finland – Tampere, Finland – Hämeenlinna, Finland – Helsinki. The ferry service between Holmsund and Vaasa is operated by Wasa Line using the M/S Aurora Botnia, with up to two daily departures in each direction taking about three and a half hours. Hemavan ( South Sami: Bïerke) is a locality situated in Storuman Municipality, Västerbotten County (Lapland), Sweden with 222 inhabitants in 2010. It is located on European route E12. During the winter months Hemavan caters to many tourists, mainly from Sweden and the neighbouring countries of Norway and Finland. Hemavan also has the Hemavan Airport, with one flight per day 6 days of the week to and from Stockholm-Arlanda. Hemavan is the starting point of the Kungsleden trail.
