2017 Gibraltar Social Democrats Leadership Election
An election for the leadership of the Gibraltar Social Democrats was held after the previous leader, Daniel Feetham, resigned. Potential candidates Members of Parliament After two MPs (Lawrence Llamas and Marlene Hassan-Nahon) resigned the party whip to become independents, the party has five members of parliament. Roy Clinton
Roy Mark Clinton is a Gibraltarian politician, banker and author who is a member of the Gibraltar Social Democrats and currently serves as the shadow minister for finance in the Parliament of Gibraltar. Clinton obtained a bachelor's degree in business studies at the University of Birmingham before working as an auditor for PriceWaterhouseCoopers. He returned to Gibraltar to work in a management position for KPMG and later became chairman of the Gibraltar Bankers’ Association. He was elected to the Parliament of Gibraltar during the 2015 Gibraltar general election and in 2017 was appointed deputy leader of the GSD. He also currently serves as the shadow minister for finance and has held the position since 2017. From July 2017 to November 2017 he served as acting leader of the party. Keith Azopardi
Keith Azopardi (born 6 June 1967) is a Gibraltarian lawyer and politician serving as Leader of the Opposition and Leader of the Gibraltar Social Democrats since 2017. He was born in Gibraltar on 6 June 1967 and was called to the Bars of England, Wales and Gibraltar in 1990. He is of Maltese descent. He was a founder member of the Gibraltar National Party (which later became the Gibraltar Liberal Party) in December 1991. He later contested the 1992 General Election as a candidate for that party, although he was not elected to Parliament. He served as Minister for Environment & Health for the Gibraltar Social Democrats from 1996 to 2000, after which he was appointed Deputy Chief Minister of Gibraltar and Minister for Trade and Industry, a position he held until 2003. He stood down from politics in 2003 but later founded the Progressive Democratic Party in June 2006. Daniel Feetham
Daniel Anthony Feetham KC MP is a Gibraltarian politician and lawyer who served as Leader of the Opposition and Leader of the Gibraltar Social Democrats (GSD) from 2013 to 2017. Political career Mr Feetham was one of the founders of the Gibraltar Labour Party in 2001. The Gibraltar Labour Party has since merged with the Gibraltar Social Democrats. He obtained a history degree from the University of Reading and a law degree from the University of Manchester. He is a barrister in England and Gibraltar and a Member of the Gibraltar Parliament. From 2004 to 2006 he was a member of the Gibraltar delegation that negotiated a new Constitution with the UK and co-ordinated the yes vote campaign in the referendum on the new Constitution in 2006. The Gibraltar Social Democrats (GSD) is a liberal-conservative, centre-right political party in Gibraltar. The GSD was the governing party for four successive terms in office under the leadership of Peter Caruana, from the 1996 general election until the party's electoral defeat in the 2011 election by the GSLP–Liberal Alliance. On 30 November 2017, the party underwent their second leadership election as its leader, Daniel Feetham, resigned in July. As a result, 60.6% of the votes (from executives and members of the party) had gone to support rejoined GSD member, Keith Azopardi, who was a minister and Deputy Chief Minister under the first few years of Peter Caruana's run as Chief Minister. Marlene Hassan-Nahon
Marlene Hassan Nahon (born 1976) is a Gibraltarian historian, journalist and politician, currently serving as a member of the Gibraltar Parliament since 2015. Biography Hassan Nahon is daughter of the late Chief Minister Sir Joshua Abraham Hassan and his second wife, Marcelle Bensimon, both Jews of Moroccan and Portuguese origin. Her sister, Fleur Hassan-Nahoum, is a Barrister and current Deputy Mayor of Jerusalem. She has a BA in History of Art and Architecture from the University of Manchester. She also holds a postgraduate diploma in journalism from the London School of Journalism. Political career After the death of minister Charles Bruzon, Hassan Nahon announced her candidacy for the Gibraltar Social Democrats (GSD) in the by-election of 4 July 2013. Elliott Phillips
The Hon. Elliot Phillips, MP is a Gibraltarian barrister and former Member of the Gibraltar Parliament from 2015-2023, representing the Gibraltar Social Democrats. Phillips studied law at the University of Plymouth and the Inns of Court School of Law. He was called to the Bar of the Middle Temple Temple, London and qualified as a barrister in England and Gibraltar in 2002. He is a partner in the London and Paris based law firm ''Signature Litigation'' which focuses on high value, high stakes cross-border commercial disputes. Damon Bossino
The Hon. Damon James Bossino, MP, (born 10 August 1983) is a Gibraltarian barrister and Member of the Gibraltar Parliament representing the Gibraltar Social Democrats. He is married to Rosa Arrimadas from Spain with whom he has three children (One of whom has severe mental disability). Biography Damon Bossino was educated at Bayside Comprehensive School, where he was a contemporary of Fabian Picardo, the incumbent Chief Minister and leader of the Gibraltar Socialist Labour Party. He studied law in England (Kingston University) and after completing his Bar Professional Training Course at the Inns of Court School of Law, he was admitted to the Bar in 1995 (England and Gibraltar). Bossino was a candidate in the 1996 general elections by the Gibraltar National Party (GNP), at the age of 24, with many still recalling the concession speech delivered on behalf of the party the morning after the vote.
