2016 Speedway World Cup
The 2016 Monster Energy FIM Speedway World Cup (SWC) was the sixteenth Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme, FIM Speedway World Cup, the annual international Motorcycle speedway, speedway world championship tournament. It took place between 23 July and 30 July 2016 and involved nine national teams. It was won by Poland national speedway team, Poland, the first time they achieved success since 2013, and the seventh time in total. They beat hosts Great Britain national speedway team, Great Britain by seven points, while defending champions Sweden national speedway team, Sweden finished third with Australia national speedway team, Australia in fourth. Speedway World Cup
The Speedway World Cup is a motorcycle speedway event for national teams held in different countries. The first edition of the competition in the current format was held in 2001 and replaced the old Speedway World Team Cup, World Team Cup which ran from 1960 until 2000. The competition was held annually until 2017 when it was replaced by the Speedway of Nations pairs event. The Speedway World Cup returned in 2023 and will be held every three years. Kjastas Poudžuks (born 23 August 1986) is a motorcycle speedway rider from Latvia and the former Latvian champion. Speedway career Puodžuks rode in the top tier of British Speedway riding for the Oxford Cheetahs during the 2005 Elite League speedway season. He was signed by the Oxford promoter Nigel Wagstaff. Puodžuks was part of the Lokomotiv Daugavpils team that first competed in the Polish leagues in 2005. In 2009, he rode for the first time in the Allsvenskan (the Swedish leagues). 2016 Speedway World Cup Event 1
Event One of the 2016 Monster Energy FIM Speedway World Cup was the opening race of the 2016 edition of the Speedway World Cup. It was staged on 23 July 2016 at Vojens Speedway Center in Vojens, Denmark and was won by Poland from hosts Denmark, Russia, and the Czech Republic. As a result, Poland progressed directly to the 2016 Speedway World Cup Final, while Denmark and Russia progressed to the 2016 Speedway World Cup Race-off. The Czech Republic were eliminated. Piotr Pawlicki Jr. led Poland to the final by scoring 12 points, while Patryk Dudek, who scored 11 points, secured second place in the heat 20 to ensure Poland finished ahead of Denmark. Michael Jepsen Jensen top scored for the Danes with 18 points, while Emil Sayfutdinov was the star of the meeting, scoring 18 points for Russia. Matic Ivačič (born 8 September 1993) is a motorcycle speedway rider from Slovenia. He is a four-time national champion. Honours In 2020, Ivačič became the Slovenian National Champion after winning the Slovenian Individual Speedway Championship, which ended the 18 year reign of Matej Žagar. Ivačič had previously won the silver medal behind Žagar in 2018 and 2019. In 2021, he became the Slovenia-Slovakia-Hungary National Champion and rode for Lendava. He has won the Slovenian Championship again in 2021, 2022 and 2023. In 2024 he made his debut in Britain, racing for Glasgow Tigers in the second tier SGB Championship. Nick Škorja (born 28 July 1998) is a Slovenian motorcycle speedway rider. Career Škorja appeared twice as a track reserve in the 2016 Speedway Grand Prix and once at the 2017 Speedway Grand Prix and 2018 Speedway Grand Prix. He has finished runner-up in the Slovenian Individual Speedway Championship in 2016, 2017, 2020 and 2022. He reached the finals of both the 2018 Speedway Under-21 World Championship and 2019 Speedway Under-21 World Championship. In 2019 he was selected for the Slovenian team for the 2019 Speedway of Nations. He would have made his British league debut for Newcastle Diamonds in 2020 but the season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He has earned multiple international caps for the Italy national speedway team and has competed for them at the Speedway World Cup. Guglielmo Franchetti or Gino Franchetti (born 5 October 1985) is an Italian former motorcycle speedway rider. Career Franchetti was a member of Italy national speedway team, earning 5 international caps and was twice Italian National Champion in 2009 and 2012. Michele Paco Castagna (born 4 March 1994) is an Italian international speedway rider. Speedway career Castagna is four times Italian Champion, winning the Italian Individual Speedway Championship in 2017, 2018, 2022 and 2024. He has also won the Italian Junior Championship three times (2011, 2012, 2014). He has ridden in the British Speedway leagues since 2015, riding for various clubs, including Ipswich Witches in 2016.
