2013 Jerusalem Mayoral Election
The 2013 Jerusalem mayoral election was held on 2 October, 2013, and saw the reelection of Nir Barkat. The election was part of the 2013 Israeli municipal elections. Campaigning Lion was regarded as the candidate of the far-right, as was strongly linked to Avigdor Lieberman. The candidate of Likud-Yisrael Beiteinu (an alliance between the Likud party led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Yisrael Beiteinu party led by Lieberman), he was regarded as Lieberman's candidate. It was believed that Lieberman had hoped that a Lion victory would bolster his chances of potentially challenging Netanyahu's leadership. Pundits observed that Haredi opponents of Netanyahu's government were supporting Lion in hopes a victory for him would help provide momentum to topple Netanyahu's coalition in the Knesset. The Knesset ( he, הַכְּנֶסֶת ; "gathering" or "assembly") is the unicameral legislature of Israel. Early elections for the nineteenth Knesset were held in Israel on 22 January 2013. Public debate over the Tal Law had nearly led to early elections in 2012, but they were aborted at the last moment after Kadima briefly joined the government. The elections were later called in early October 2012 after failure to agree on the budget for the 2013 fiscal year. Jerusalem Faction
The Jerusalem Faction ( he, הפלג הירושלמי ''HaPeleg HaYerushalmi'', or simply Peleg Yerushalmi) is an Israeli-Haredi political organization based in Jerusalem. It was founded in 2012 by Shmuel Auerbach, as a reaction to the Bnei Brak-based Degel HaTorah's perceived moderate approach to the question of conscription of Haredim into the Israel Defence Forces by the Israeli government that came up following the expiration of the Tal Law. Aryeh Makhlouf Deri (, ), also Arie Deri, Arye Deri, or Arieh Deri (born 17 February 1959), is an Israeli politician. He is one of the founders of the Shas political party, and has served as Israel's Minister of the Interior, Minister of the Development of the Negev and Galilee, Minister of the Economy and as a member in the Security Cabinet of Israel. Nir Barkat
Nir Barkat ( he, נִיר בַּרְקָת; born 19 October 1959) is an Israeli businessman and politician. He served as mayor of Jerusalem between the years 2008–2018. Biography Nir Barkat was raised in Jerusalem. His father, Zalman, was a professor of physics at the Hebrew University. His great-grandfather came from Russia to Mandatory Palestine in the 1920s, and died in 1924. Barkat served in the Paratroopers Brigade of the Israel Defense Forces for six years (1977-1983), as well as reserve duty, and reached the rank of Major. Barkat was also wounded in combat in Lebanon. Barkat holds a BA in computer science from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He also studied for a master's degree in business administration at the same institution, but hasn't completed it.
