2012–13 MJHL Season
The 2012–13 season was the Manitoba Junior Hockey League's (MJHL) 96th season of operation. Season highlights *The Winnipeg Saints are sold to a group from Virden in April 2012 and relocate to the southwestern Manitoba community. The team is renamed the Virden Oil Capitals and moves to the Sherwood Division. The Winnipeg Blues are now the sole team based in Winnipeg. *The Steinbach Pistons are purchased by a group of local investors and become a community-owned organization. *The league shortens its regular season schedule from 341 games to 330. Manitoba Junior Hockey League
The Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) is a Junior ice hockey, Junior 'A' ice hockey league operating in the Canadian province of Manitoba and one of nine member leagues of the Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL). The MJHL consists of thirteen teams all based within the province of Manitoba, eight of which qualify for each year's playoffs. The playoff champion is awarded the Turnbull Cup, the Junior 'A' championship trophy for the province of Manitoba. The winner of the MJHL playoffs (Turnbull Cup) earns a berth in the national championship, the Centennial Cup. History Early years (1918 to 1949) The league's first year of operation was the 1918–19 season, making it the oldest junior league in Canada. OCN Blizzard
The Northern Manitoba Blizzard are a Junior "A" ice hockey team from The Pas, Manitoba, Canada. They are members of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League, a part of the Canadian Junior Hockey League and Hockey Canada. History The team was founded by the Opaskwayak Cree Nation as the OCN Blizzard in 1996. It was a year in the making with the Cree Nation's goal to enter the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL). Their hockey development and recreation department spent many months prior getting the community members on board through community meetings and house to house visits. Boh Kubrakovich, Jim Smith and Nathan McGillivary spent time working with the SJHL prior to entering their current league, the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL). The Blizzard name and jersey was styled after the Utica Blizzard of the Colonial Hockey League. Mike Ridley Trophy
The Mike Ridley Trophy is awarded to the player who leads the Manitoba Junior Hockey League in points scoring during the regular season. The trophy is named after former National Hockey League star Mike Ridley, who holds the List of top goal scorers in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League, MJHL single season scoring records for points (191) and goals (91), which were set with the St. Boniface Saints during the 1982–83 season. The current trophy was first awarded in 2003, replacing the Selkirk Steelers Trophy previous awarded to the scoring champion. Lorne Lyndon Memorial Trophy
The Frank McKinnon Memorial Trophy is an annual award given by the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) to the player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability during the regular season. The trophy is named after the late former MJHL commissioner and Hockey Canada executive. History The first trophy awarded by the MJHL for sportsmanship was the Cadet Trophy. It was succeeded by the Lorne Lyndon Memorial Trophy in 1966, named in honour of one of Canada's most renowned officials who officiated from 1933 to 1953, including six Allan Cup finals, three Memorial Cup finals, and the 1951 Alexander Cup. Vince Leah Trophy
The Kim Davis Trophy is an annual award given to the player selected as the most proficient in his first year of competition in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League during the regular season. The trophy is named after former MJHL commissioner Kim Davis. History The Rookie of the Year award was created in 1950. Steve "Boomer" Hawrysh Award
The Steve "Boomer" Hawrysh Award is an ice hockey trophy that is presented annually to the Most Valuable Player of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) during the regular season. Steve “Boomer” Hawrysh reached a milestone in 1992 with 60 consecutive years in total hockey involvement in Dauphin. As a player, Hawrysh was on three Manitoba championship winners with the Dauphin intermediates. He began coaching in 1952 in Dauphin, Manitoba. Neepawa Natives
The Neepawa Titans (formerly the Neepawa Natives) are a Canadian Junior "A" ice hockey team from Neepawa, Manitoba. They are members of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL), a part of the Canadian Junior Hockey League, and play home games at the Yellowhead Centre. History Neepawa Natives (1989–2021) Neepawa's MJHL team was founded in 1989 as the Neepawa Natives. The creation of the original team name was rooted in the early 1960s, with the then-named Neepawa Intermediates hockey team. In 1963, Ron Guinn and Cecil Pittman suggested the Neepawa Intermediates should create an actual team name for the Neepawa-based hockey club. A name that would connect to Neepawa (a Cree name meaning ''abundance'' or ''plenty'') was explored. The name 'Natives' was selected because Neepawa and Natives both start with the letter 'N', and were seven letters long, which led Pittman and Guinn to believe it was a good fit for the team.
