Uruguay (; ), officially the Oriental Republic of Uruguay ( es, República Oriental del Uruguay), is a country in South America. It shares borders with Argentina to its west and southwest and Brazil to its north and northeast; while bordering the Río de la Plata to the south and the Atlantic Ocean to the southeast. It is part of the Southern Cone region of South America. The president of Uruguay ( es, Presidente del Uruguay), officially known as the president of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay (), is the head of state and head of government of Uruguay. Their rights are determined in the Constitution of Uruguay. Along with the Secretariat of the Presidency, the Council of Ministers and the director of the Office of Planning and Budget, the President is part of the executive branch. In case of absence, their office is exercised by the vice president. In turn, the president of the republic is the commander in chief of the Armed Forces. Since 1990, the president's term has begun and ended on 1 March. This same date for ending the presidency also happened during the National Council of Government (1952–1967) and it has been not unusual since 1839. José Mujica
José Alberto "Pepe" Mujica Cordano (; born 20 May 1935) is a Uruguayan politician, former revolutionary and farmer who served as the 40th president of Uruguay from 2010 to 2015. A former guerrilla with the Tupamaros, he was tortured and imprisoned for 14 years during the military dictatorship in the 1970s and 1980s. A member of the Broad Front coalition of left-wing parties, Mujica was Minister of Livestock, Agriculture, and Fisheries from 2005 to 2008 and a Senator afterwards. As the candidate of the Broad Front, he won the 2009 presidential election and took office as president on 1 March 2010. He was the Second Gentleman of Uruguay from 13 September 2017 to 1 March 2020, when his wife Lucia Topolansky was vice president under his immediate predecessor and successor, Tabaré Vázquez. The vice president of Uruguay is the person with the second highest position in the executive branch of the Uruguayan government, after the President of Uruguay. The Vice President replaces the elected President in case of his death or absence. The vice president is also an officer in the legislative branch, as president of the Chamber of Senators and of the General Assembly. Danilo Astori
Danilo Ángel Astori Saragosa (born April 23, 1940) is a Uruguayan retired social democratic politician who served as the 15th vice president of Uruguay from 2010 to 2015 under President José Mujica. A member of Uruguay Assembly– Broad Front, he also served as Minister of Economy and Finance from 2005 to 2008 and from 2015 to 2020, and as Senator of the Republic from 1990 to 2005. Astori was born and raised in Montevideo. He completed his primary and secondary studies at the Liceo y Colegio Maturana located in ''barrio'' Bella Vista. In 1958 he enrolled in the Faculty of Economics of the University of the Republic, and in 1963 he graduated as a public accountant and economist. Uruguay competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, from 27 July to 12 August 2012. This was the nation's twentieth appearance at the Olympics, Uruguay missed the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, because of its partial support for the United States boycott. The Uruguayan Olympic Committee ( es, Comité Olímpico Uruguayo, ''COU'') sent the nation's largest delegation to the Games since 1968. A total of 29 athletes, 26 men and 3 women, competed in 8 sports. Men's football was the only team-based sport in which Uruguay was represented at these Olympic games. There was only a single competitor in road cycling, judo and shooting. The 2011–12 Liga Profesional de Primera División season, also known as the 2011–12 Copa Uruguaya or the 2011–12 Campeonato Uruguayo, was the 108th season of Uruguay's top-flight football league, and the 81st in which it was professional. Nacional was the defending champion. Teams Sixteen teams competed in the Primera División this season. Thirteen teams remained from the 2010–11 season. Miramar Misiones, Tacuarembó, and Central Español were relegated after accumulating the fewest points in the relegation table. Nelly María Hunter, better known by her stage name Nina Miranda (November 8, 1925 – January 1, 2012) was a Uruguayan tango singer and composer who settled in Argentina in the early 1950s.
