This article lists the confirmed national speedway squads for the 2009 Speedway World Cup tournament held between 11 and 18 July 2009. Squads for the tournament consisted of 10 riders, same as the previous tournament in 2008. Motorcycle Speedway
Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four clockwise, anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines that use only one gear and have no brakes. Racing takes place on a flat oval track usually consisting of soil, dirt, loosely packed shale, or crushed rock (mostly used in Australia and New Zealand). Competitors use this surface to slide their machines sideways, powersliding or broadsiding into the bends. On the straight sections of the track, the motorcycles reach speeds of up to . Niels Kristian Trochmann Iversen (, born 20 June 1982 in Esbjerg, Denmark) is an international motorcycle speedway rider. He is a seven times national champion of Denmark and was part of the Danish teams that won the Speedway World Cup in 2006, 2008, 2012 and 2014. Early life Niels-Kristian Trochmann was born 20 June 1982 in Esbjerg, Denmark to Ann Marie and Flemming Iversen. Growing up with older brother Soren, Iversen decided he want to be a speedway rider. His local town Esbjerg had a track where Iversen began to learn his desired trade. Quickly moving up the ranks in Denmark, his first title came in 1994 at the 50cc Danish Individual Championship. Moving up to 80cc in 1997 saw him win his second title at 15 years old. In 1998 Iversen moved up to full size 500cc bikes. Bjarne Aagaard Pedersen (born 12 July 1978 in Holstebro, Denmark) is a former international motorcycle speedway rider who represented Denmark in the Speedway World Cup, winning it on two occasions: in 2006 and 2008. Career summary Pedersen began his speedway career in 1990. He won his first title in 1994 winning a Danish junior pairs championship with Charlie Gjedde. However, he did not ride as a full-time professional until 2000. Pedersen began his United Kingdom racing career in with the Newcastle Diamonds in the Premier League. Nicki Pedersen (born 2 April 1977) is a Danish motorcycle speedway rider. He is a three time world champion having won the World Championship in 2003, 2007 and 2008. He has also won the World Cup with Denmark in 2006, 2008, 2012 and 2014. Career Pedersen began speedway racing aged 11 at Danish club Fjelsted. He stayed at the club until a move to in 1998 to Holstebro, the same year that he made his British league debut with Newcastle Diamonds in the 1998 Premier League speedway season. He topped the League averages which began his journey towards the pinnacle of the sport. He started his Polish speedway career in 1999 with Polish Speedway First League club Start Gniezno and would go on to ride for ten different Polish sides. Jan Stæchmann (born 5 June 1966 in Kolding, Denmark) is a former professional motorcycle speedway rider and manager of the Danish national team. He earned 13 caps for the Denmark national speedway team. Career In 1991, he won the British League Division Two Riders Championship, held on 14 September at Brandon Stadium. He led Denmark to the 2006 Speedway World Cup and 2008 Speedway World Cup, as well as the 2010 U21 Team World Championship. He is a Czech Republic national champion and earned 10 international caps for the Czech Republic national speedway team. Filip Šitera (born 18 April 1988 in Mladá Boleslav, Czechoslovakia) is a former international motorcycle speedway rider. He earned 3 international caps for the Czech Republic national speedway team. Career Despite showing an interest to ride in the United Kingdom, and attracting the attention of several British clubs, Šitera ruled out riding in the UK from the start of 2008 due to racing and educational commitments but he signed for the Coventry Bees in July. He rides in Poland for Atlas Wrocław and signed a deal to ride in Sweden for Griparna in 2008. Šitera travelled to Australia in 2007 where he would win the Jack Young Solo Cup at the Gillman Speedway in Adelaide, becoming the first (and so far only) Czech rider to win the cup named in honour of Adelaide's 1951 and 1952 Speedway World Champion.
