2009 Frome State By-election
A by-election was held for the South Australian House of Assembly seat of Electoral district of Frome, Frome on 17 January 2009. This was triggered by the resignation of former Premier of South Australia, premier and state Liberal Party of Australia (South Australian Division), Liberal MHA Rob Kerin. The seat had been retained by the Liberals at the 2006 South Australian state election, 2006 state election on a 3.4 per cent margin, and at the 2002 South Australian state election, 2002 state election on an 11.5 per cent margin. The Writ of election, writ for the by-election was issued on 28 November, with the Electoral roll, rolls closing on 8 December. Candidate nominations closed 18 December at midday. Independent candidate Geoff Brock ended up winning the seat from the Liberals in a very close contest. Frome ( ) is a town and civil parishes in England, civil parish in Somerset, England, on uneven high ground at the eastern end of the Mendip Hills and on the River Frome, Somerset, River Frome, south of Bath, Somerset, Bath. The population of the parish was 28,559 in 2021. Frome was one of the largest towns in Somerset until the Industrial Revolution. The town first grew due to the wool and cloth industry; it later diversified into metal-working and printing, although these have declined. The town was enlarged during the 20th century but retains a large number of listed buildings, and most of the centre falls within a conservation area. The town has road and rail transport links and acts as an economic centre for the surrounding area. Mike Rann
Michael David Rann (born 5 January 1953) is an Australian former politician who was the 44th premier of South Australia from 2002 to 2011. He was later Australian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom from 2013 to 2014, and List of Australian ambassadors to Italy, Australian ambassador to Italy, Albania, Libya and San Marino from 2014 to 2016. Rann grew up in the United Kingdom and New Zealand, completing a Bachelor and Master of Arts in political science at the University of Auckland. Smelter
Smelting is a process of applying heat and a chemical reducing agent to an ore to extract a desired base metal product. It is a form of extractive metallurgy that is used to obtain many metals such as iron, copper, silver, tin, lead and zinc. Smelting uses heat and a chemical reducing agent to decompose the ore, driving off other elements as gases or slag and leaving the metal behind. The reducing agent is commonly a fossil-fuel source of carbon, such as carbon monoxide from incomplete combustion of coke—or, in earlier times, of charcoal. Nyrstar is an international producer of minerals and metals. It was founded in August 2007 and listed on the Euronext Brussels that October. Nyrstar has mining, smelting and other operations located in Europe, the United States and Australia and employs approximately 4,000 people. Its headquarters are in Budel-Dorplein, the Netherlands. Nyrstar’s operating business is wholly owned by Trafigura, an independent commodity trading and supply chain logistics company. Australian Democrats
The Australian Democrats is a centrist political party in Australia. Founded in 1977 from a merger of the Australia Party and the New Liberal Movement, both of which were descended from Liberal Party splinter groups, it was Australia's largest minor party from its formation in 1977 through to 2004 and frequently held the balance of power in the Senate during that time. The Democrats' inaugural leader was Don Chipp, a former Liberal cabinet minister, who famously promised to "keep the bastards honest". At the 1977 federal election, the Democrats polled 11.1 percent of the Senate vote and secured two seats. Family First Party
The Family First Party was a conservative political party in Australia which existed from 2002 to 2017. It was founded in South Australia where it enjoyed its greatest electoral support. Since the demise of the Australian Conservatives into which it merged, it has been refounded in that state as the Family First Party (2021). Family First had three candidates elected to the Senate during its existence— Steve Fielding (2005–2011), Bob Day (2014–2016), and Lucy Gichuhi (2017; elected on a countback following Day being declared ineligible). An independent politician or non-affiliated politician is a politician not affiliated with any political party or Bureaucracy, bureaucratic association. There are numerous reasons why someone may stand for office as an independent. Some politicians have political views that do not align with the platforms of any political party and therefore they choose not to affiliate with them. One Nation (Australia)
Pauline Hanson's One Nation (PHON), also known as One Nation (ON) or One Nation Party (ONP), is a right-wing populist political party in Australia. It is led by Pauline Hanson. One Nation was founded in 1997 by Hanson and her advisors David Ettridge and David Oldfield after Hanson was disendorsed as a federal candidate for the Liberal Party of Australia. The disendorsement came before the 1996 federal election following comments she made about Indigenous Australians. Australian Greens SA is a green political party located in the Australian state of South Australia. It is a member of the federation of the Australian Greens party. The party has four members in the federal and state parliaments: Sarah Hanson-Young and Barbara Pocock in the Senate; and Tammy Franks and Robert Simms in the South Australian Legislative Council. The Port Pirie Regional Council (PPRC) is a local government area in South Australia, focused on the city of Port Pirie. It has a population of about 18,000 people. Lynn Arnold
Lynn Maurice Ferguson Arnold, (born 27 January 1949) is an Anglican priest and a former Australian politician, who represented the South Australian Branch of the Australian Labor Party, serving as Premier of South Australia between 4 September 1992 and 14 December 1993, during the 11 years of Labor government which ended in a landslide defeat of his government at the 1993 election. After leaving politics, Arnold worked for World Vision from 1997 to 2007, and for Anglicare SA after March 2008. In November 2013, he was ordained as a deacon in the Anglican Church.
