Nyrstar
Nyrstar is an international producer of minerals and metals. It was founded in August 2007 and listed on the Euronext Brussels that October. Nyrstar has mining, smelting and other operations located in Europe, the United States and Australia and employs approximately 4,000 people. Its headquarters are in Budel-Dorplein, the Netherlands. Nyrstar’s operating business is wholly owned by Trafigura, an independent commodity trading and supply chain logistics company. Nyrstar was created in 2007 by combining the zinc smelting and alloying operations of Zinifex (an Australian mining company, now merged with Oxiana to form Oz Minerals) and Umicore (a Belgian materials technology company). Zinifex
Zinifex was an Australian company that operated lead and zinc mines, refineries and a lead smelter. It was established in April 2004, when the assets of Pasminco were spun-off. In 2008 it merged with Oxiana to form OZ Minerals. History In September 2001, Pasminco was placed in voluntary administration. Some assets were sold by administrator Ferrier Hodgson, with the remaining profitable assets spun-off to a new entity, Zinifex, which was listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) in April 2004. Assets included mines in Mount Isa and Rosebery, and smelters in Budel (The Netherlands), Clarkesville (United States), Hobart and Port Pirie. After floating on the ASX, Zinifex proved successful mainly due to the company keeping no hedges in place, and benefiting from rises in the zinc price. Budel-Dorplein
Budel-Dorplein is a village in the municipality of Cranendonck, Netherlands. The village was established in 1892 for a zinc factory by Emile Dor. History The village was first mentioned in 1893 as Dorplein. It was established by Emile Dor who built houses for the workers of his zinc factory in 1892. The suffix -plein means square. The village was initially called Nieuwdorp. The factory was built in 1892 and originally consisted of six ovens, a factory hall and an office building. Many more buildings were added later, and few of the original factory buildings remain. The St Joseph Hotel was a building built between 1896 and 1898. The building contained a hotel for the workers at the factory, but also a boys and girls school, shops, a bakery and a recreational facility. The inside was modernised in 1950. Zinc Smelting
Zinc smelting is the process of converting zinc concentrates ( ores that contain zinc) into pure zinc. Zinc smelting has historically been more difficult than the smelting of other metals, e.g. iron, because in contrast, zinc has a low boiling point. At temperatures typically used for smelting metals, zinc is a gas that will escape from a furnace with the flue gas and be lost, unless specific measures are taken to prevent it.
