2009 Duel In The Pool
The 2009 Duel in the Pool was a swimming competition between a team from the United States and a combined British, German and Italian "E-Stars" team held on Friday 18 and Saturday 19 December 2009 at the Manchester Aquatics Centre, United Kingdom. The naming rights are held by Mutual of Omaha and British Gas in the United States and Europe respectively – the event was therefore promoted as the 2009 Mutual of Omaha Duel in the Pool and 2009 British Gas Duel in the Pool. The duel was won by the United States with a final score of 185–78, with eight short course world records broken – all by the USA team. Rebecca Adlington
Rebecca Adlington (born 17 February 1989) is an English former competitive swimmer who specialised in freestyle events in international competition. She won two gold medals at the 2008 Summer Olympics in the 400-metre freestyle and 800-metre freestyle, breaking the 19-year-old world record of Janet Evans in the 800-metre final. Adlington was Britain's first Olympic swimming champion since 1988, and the first British swimmer to win two Olympic gold medals since 1908. Federico Colbertaldo (born 17 October 1988) is an Italian freestyle swimmer. In 2006, Colbertaldo was Junior European Champion in 400 m freestyle and won the silver medal in 200 m and 1500 m of the same stroke. Keri-Anne Payne (born 9 December 1987), is a South African-born British swimmer, specialising in marathon open water swimming, and long-distance freestyle swimming in the pool. She is a two-time 10-kilometre open water world champion, and an Olympic silver medallist. Swimming career Payne was born on 9 December 1987 in Johannesburg, South Africa, to British parents, who registered her birth at the British Consulate. She started swimming aged 4, and was noticed aged 8 by British Swimming's national performance director Bill Sweetenham at a training camp in South Africa. Alessia Filippi (born 23 June 1987 in Rome) is a retired Italian swimmer. Filippi won the gold medal in the 1500 m at the 2009 World Championships in Rome. Biography Filippi excels in backstroke and individual medley races, as well as in middle-distance freestyle (400 to 1500 m). She won 400 m individual medley at the 2006 European Swimming Championships in Budapest. Steffen Deibler (born 10 July 1987) is a German former competitive swimmer from Biberach an der Riß. From 2009 to 2018 he was the world record holder for the 50 m butterfly ( short course). Swimming career Deibler specialized in short distances in the butterfly and freestyle. Jazmin Roxy "Jazz" Carlin (born 17 September 1990) is a former British competitive swimmer, who previously represented Wales and the Great Britain swimming team. Federica Pellegrini (; born 5 August 1988) is an Italian retired swimmer. A native of Mirano, in the former province of Venice (Metropolitan City of Venice since 2015), she won a gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
