2008–09 Syrian Premier League
The 2008–09 Syrian Premier League is the 38th season of the Syrian Premier League, Syria's premier football league. The season began on 10 October 2008 and finished on 12 June 2009. Afrin and Al-Horriya were relegated from the previous season. Al-Wathba and Omyyah moved up from the Syrian League 1st Division. At the end of the campaign, defending champions Al-Karamah were level on 52 points with Al-Ittihad and therefore were required to have a one off playoff match to determine the league champions. Al-Futowa and Hutteen were relegated and would be replaced by Afrin and Al-Jazeera for the 2009–10 Syrian Premier League campaign. Syrian international Mohamed Al Zeno finished the campaign as leading goalscorer with 17 goals. Continental Cups AFC Cup Al-Karamah and Al-Majd entered the AFC Cup 2009 tournament. Syrian Premier League
The Syrian Premier League () is a professional association football league in Syria and the top division of the Syrian football league system. The league comprises 12 teams and operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the Syrian League 1st Division. The Syrian Premier League was founded in 1966, unifying the local leagues that had existed previously. Seasons mostly run from August to May. The first team to win the title was Al-Ittihad Ahli in 1967, whilst Al-Jaish has the record with 17 league titles. Their closest rivals, Al-Karamah, have won the league 8 times. Al-Wathba
Al-Wathba Sport Club () is a Syrian professional football club based in Homs that competes in the Syrian Premier League. History One of the oldest Syrian clubs, Al-Wathba were founded in 1937 as "Al-Fedaa Club" by a number of young amateur athletes who used "Dar Al-Jodi", located in al-Hamidiyah neighborhood of Homs, to practice their sport activities. In 1953, the club obtained the license, adding football, basketball games, athletics, swimming, and cycling. They won the Homs championship from 1963 to 1968. Al-Wathba is the first football club represented the city of Homs in the Syrian Premier League which started in 1973. Khaled Bin Walid Stadium
Khalid ibn al-Walid Stadium () is a multi-use stadium located in thecity of Homs. It is the third-largest football stadium in Syria and is mostly used for football matches. It serves as the home ground of Al-Karamah SC and Al-Wathba SC and holds around 32,000 spectators. History The greater part of the necropolis of Tell Abu Sabun was made to disappear by 1952 in order to build the stadium. The Arab Club Champions Cup (, ) is a club football competition organised by the Union of Arab Football Associations (UAFA) and contested by top clubs from the Arab world. Taliya Sports Club () is a Syrian professional football club based in Hama. History The Taliya Sports Club was founded in 1941 in the Syrian city of Hama under the name of Al-Waqah Club. The 2009 AFC Cup was the sixth season of the AFC Cup, a competition among clubs from member nations of the Asian Football Confederation. Al-Majd Sports Club () is a Syrian professional football club based in Damascus. The club is insignificant compared to the city rival Al-Wahda, but more popular than the other rival Al-Jaish. History The club was founded in 1932 as Damascus Al-Ahly Club, and is one of the oldest football clubs in Syria. The club's greatest success is the Syrian cup victory in the 1960/61 and 1977/78 season. At the end of the 2007/08 season of Premier League, the club was runner-up and thus achieved its highest ranking in the league at all.
