2008 Palauan Presidential Election
General elections were held in Palau on 4 November 2008 to elect the President and members of the National Congress. The presidential election was won by Johnson Toribiong. Incumbent President Tommy Remengesau was ineligible to run because he had served the maximum two consecutive terms allowed and announced that he would run for a seat in the Senate. This was the first election in Palau in which presidential candidates ran with a declared vice-presidential candidates. In previous elections, the President and Vice-Presidents had been elected separately, and the winners of those elections served as a "national leadership team". Regina Mesebeluu
Regina Mesebeluu is a Palauan who was a senator in the Palau National Congress (''Olbiil era Kelulau''), between 2008 and 2012. Education and teaching career Regina Kyota Mesebeluu married Augustine Mesebeluu, who was a member of the House of Delegates of Palau and the speaker of that body between January 2005 and April 2007. They had three children. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts in education from Seattle University in 1978 and a master's in education leadership from San Diego State University. She worked for over 20 years in the Ministry of Education, first as a classroom teacher, and later as coordinator and director of various federal programs. Later she was in charge of the Health and Science Curriculum for Palau. Subsequently, she became the director of the Belau Head Start Program, which supports the early childhood education of low-income children and children with disabilities. Katharine Kesolei
Katharine Kesolei (1942 - 13 October 2015) was an anthropologist and Senator from Palau. Kesolei was born in the state of Ngchesar, on Babeldaob island. In 1960, Kesolei was involved with founding the Micronesian Girls Association. She was also a member of Mechesil Belau, Palau’s traditional women leaders’ group, and contributed to its annual conference from 1994 until her death. The conference became a national public forum for traditional women leaders to discuss and propose resolutions for government to enact with regard to cultural, social, health and environmental challenges. Kesolei studied anthropology at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and became an expert in cultural conservation. She led a number of initiatives to celebrate and preserve Palauan culture and history, such as the writing of a four volume anthology of Palauan legends and history, and directed the Palau History Development Project in her role as Director of the Palau Community Action Agency. Surangel Whipps
Surangel S. Whipps (born 21 February 1941) is a Palauan businessman and politician. He served as the president of the Senate of Palau from January 2005 to April 2005, and from 25 April 2007 to 15 January 2009, and as the speaker of the House of Delegates of Palau from January 1993 to November 1996. He was born in Airai. He graduated from University of Baltimore in 1971 and returned to Palau in 1972. He began his political career in 1982 when he was elected in his home state, Ngatpang. In 1984, he was elected by to the House of Delegates of Palau in the Second Olbiil Era Kelulau. He served 16 years in the House of Delegates.
