2008 NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour
The 2008 NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour was the fourth season of the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour (WSMT). It began with the Whelen Southern Modified Tour 150 at Caraway Speedway on March 22. It ended with the Whelen 150 at Caraway again on October 4. L. W. Miller entered the season as the defending championship. Brian Loftin (racing driver), Brian Loftin would win his first and only championship in the series, 30 points ahead of series runner up Tim Brown (racing driver), Tim Brown. Whelen Southern Modified Tour
The Southern Modified Auto Racing Teams (SMART) Tour is a Modified stock car racing series racing in the Southeastern United States, Southeastern region of The United States. The series began in 1989, NASCAR took over the series in 2005. During its time as a NASCAR sanctioned series it followed identical regulations to the Northern NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. The series merged with the Northern Modified Tour in 2017 bringing an end to the series after almost 30 years. The series came back in late 2020 without NASCAR sanction under the SMART Tour name and ran its first full season since 2004 in 2021 with the likes of Bobby Labonte and Ryan Preece competing. Martinsville Speedway
Martinsville Speedway is a oval Oval track racing#Short track, short track in Ridgeway, Virginia, United States, a community of Martinsville, Virginia. The track has held a variety of events since its opening in 1947, primarily events sanctioned by NASCAR. Martinsville Speedway is owned by NASCAR and led by track president Clay Campbell. Originally a dirt oval, Martinsville Speedway opened in September 1947 under the ownership of Virginia businessman H. Clay Earles, Henry Clay Earles. The facility quickly formed a relationship with NASCAR, with it hosting its first Cup Series races in 1949 and half interest of the track being purchased by the France family the year after. Frank Fleming (born July 25, 1959) is an American stock car racing driver. Fleming previously competed in the NASCAR Busch Series and the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour. Currently, he competes part-time in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. Fleming competed in 10 NASCAR Busch Series races between 1988 and 1991. Jason Myers (born November 17, 1978) is an American professional stock car racing driver who last competed full-time in the SMART Modified Tour, driving the No. 4 for Gary Myers. He is the younger brother of multi-time Bowman Gray Stadium track champion Burt Myers. Ryan Preece (born October 25, 1990) is an American professional stock car racing driver. He competes full-time in the NASCAR Cup Series, driving the No. 60 Ford Mustang (seventh generation), Ford Mustang Dark Horse for RFK Racing. George "Georgie" Brunnhoelzl III (born October 28, 1982) is an American professional stock car racing driver who competed part-time in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. Andrew T. Seuss (born March 15, 1987) is an American professional stock car racing driver and team owner. William Burton Myers (born December 30, 1975) is an American professional stock car racing driver who competes full-time on the SMART Modified Tour, and part-time in the NASCAR Cup Series, driving the No. 50 Chevrolet ZL1 for Team AmeriVet. Myers has 19 career wins and won the 2010 and 2016 NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour Championship, and has won more pole awards than any other driver in the Tour's history.
