General elections were held on the Isle of Man on Thursday, 23 November 2006. The voting age was lowered to 16 at this election. As usual, the election was dominated by independents, who took 21 of the 24 seats. House Of Keys
The House of Keys () is the directly elected lower house of Tynwald, the parliament of the Isle of Man, the other branch being the Legislative Council. History The oldest known reference to the name is in a document of 1417, written in Latin by an English scholar, which refers to (the "Keys of Man") and (the "Keys of Law"). There is a dispute, however, over the origin of the name. The word ''keys'' is thought by some to be an English corruption of a form of the Norse verb ("to choose"). However, a more likely explanation is that it is a mishearing of the Manx-language term for "four and twenty": , the House having always had 24 members. The Manx-language name of the House remains ("The Four and Twenty"). Governance Members are known as ''Members of the House of Keys'' (MHKs). David Anderson (Manx Politician)
David Moore Anderson (born 6 February 1954) is a former Member of the House of Keys (MHK) for Glenfaba. He also served in a number of ministerial posts on the Isle of Man and is therefore a former member of the Council of Ministers. Political career Anderson was elected as a Member of the House of Keys in 2001 for Glenfaba. He was re-elected in 2006 and 2011. He had previously served as a Commissioner for the parish of Patrick from 1992 until his election to the House of Keys. He was elected to the Legislative Council in 2015, for what was intended to be a five-year term, but he announced his early retirement in 2018. He was called to resign by protesters following his support of legislation which would have prohibited the advocacy of homosexuality in schools. Glenfaba
Glenfaba ( ; ) is one of the six sheadings of the Isle of Man. It is located on the west of the island (part of the traditional ''North Side'' division) and consists of the two historic parishes of German and Patrick. It includes the town of Peel and, from 1796 till 1986, also included the parish of Marown. Other settlements in the sheading include St John's in the parish of German (home of the Tynwald Day ceremony), and Dalby, Foxdale, Glen Maye and Niarbyl (all in the parish of Patrick). Steve Rodan
Stephen Charles Rodan MLC (born 19 April 1954) is a Manx politician who served as the President of Tynwald from 2016 to 2021 and is a former Minister of the Isle of Man Government and former MHK for the constituency of Garff. He was first elected to the seat in a by-election in 1995. He has been Isle of Man County Chairman of the Royal British Legion since 2012. Early life and career Born on 19 April 1954 in Glasgow to Robert W. Rodan and Betty Rodan (née Turner), he is a qualified pharmacist. Rodan was educated at the High School of Glasgow and the University of Edinburgh, before graduating from Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, with a BSc (Hons) in pharmacy. Garff
Garff () is one of the six sheadings of the Isle of Man. It is located on the east of the island (part of the traditional ''South Side'' division) and consists of the two historic parishes of Lonan (parish), Lonan and Maughold (parish), Maughold. Before 1796 it also included the parish of Onchan (parish), Onchan. Administratively, since May 2016 the sheading of Garff has been covered by a single Garff local authority, a parish district, formed by merging the former village district of Laxey with the parish districts of Lonan and Maughold. The town of Ramsey, Isle of Man, Ramsey, which is administered separately, covers areas of two historic parishes (Maughold, and Lezayre in the sheading of Ayre). It is treated as part of Garff for some purposes, e.g. the coroner. Geoff Cannell
Geoffrey Thornton Cannell (July 1, 1942 – September 24, 2007) was a Member of the House of Keys (MHK) and a sports broadcaster in the Isle of Man. Biography Geoff Cannell was born on July 1, 1942, in Douglas and educated on the Island. Apart from his brief spell in the House of Keys and another in the Tourist Board from 1978 he worked for Manx Radio as press officer, sports editor and news editor. He generally is well known for covering major sports events, especially the TT and also for his coverage of Tynwald. In 1998, he was elected the MHK for Onchan, following Ray Kniveton's elevation to the Legislative Council. John Shimmin
John Philip Shimmin (born 1 July 1960) is a former Member of the House of Keys for Douglas West. Early life Shimmin was born in Douglas in 1960 and educated at St Ninian's High School and the Worcester College of Higher Education. He was then a teacher (Physical Education, Mathematics, General Studies) from 1982 in several areas of the UK - Crewe, Tamworth, Knowsley before returning to teach in Douglas (St Ninian's High School) where he was also Head of Year from 1989 to 1996 until entering politics. Political career Shimmin was elected as MHK for Douglas West in 1996 at his first attempt. He became Chairman of the Isle of Man Post Office in 1999 before becoming Minister of Transport in 2002. Bill Malarkey (politician)
William Mackay Malarkey (18 June 1951– 20 February 2020) was a Manx politician, who was elected Liberal Vannin MHK for Douglas South but later defected from the party and sat as an independent. In the 2011 general election he lost his seat to Liberal Vannin candidate Kate Beecroft. He was re-elected at a by-election in May 2015 as an independent candidate, and retained his seat for Douglas South in September 2016. Bill Malarkey died on 20 February 2020. He had been suffering from cancer for some time.
