2005 Girabola
The 2005 Girabola was the 27th season of top-tier football in Angola. The season ran from 20 February to 23 October 2005. Atlético Sport Aviação, ASA were the defending champions. The league comprised 14 teams, the bottom three of which were relegated to the 2006 Gira Angola. G.D. Sagrada Esperança, Sagrada Esperança were crowned champions, while Académica Petróleos do Lobito, Académica do Lobito, Atlético Petróleos do Huambo, Petro do Huambo and Sporting Clube Petróleos do Bié, Sporting do Bié were relegated. Girabola, or ''Campeonato Nacional de Futebol de Séniores Masculinos'', is the top division of Angolan association football, football. It is organized by the Angolan Football Federation. The term "Girabola" () is a creation of the nationalist, radio broadcaster and sports reporter Rui Carvalho, in 1972, at a time when the Angolan championship was still officially called "Campeonato do Estado Ultramarino de Angola". The name "Girabola" differentiated the competition from the other overseas provinces and was a subtle form of anti-colonial protest. Académica Petróleo Kwanda Soyo best known as Académica do Soyo, is an Angolan football club based in Soyo, in the province of Zaire. They play their home games at the Estádio dos Imbondeiros. Estrela Clube Primeiro de Maio, usually known simply as Primeiro de Maio or 1º de Maio, is a football (soccer) club from Benguela, Angola. Progresso Associação do Sambizanga is an Angolan football club based in Luanda. The club was founded in 1975, as a result of a merger of three clubs: Juventude Unida do Bairro Alfredo (JUBA), Juventista and Vaza.
