2004–05 WWHL Season
The 2004–05 WWHL season was the first season of the Western Women's Hockey League. Previously this league did not exist and the western teams were in a division of the National Women's Hockey League (1999), National Women's Hockey League. Western Women's Hockey League
The Western Women's Hockey League (WWHL) was a women's hockey league in Canada. The league was established in 2004, and consisted of teams in Canada (some former National Women's Hockey League teams) and one from the United States. The league office was in Vancouver, British Columbia, and managed by Recreation Sports Management. History On July 13, 2006, the National Women's Hockey League announced it would absorb the WWHL's teams into its new West division. However, scheduling conflicts between the 2007 Women's World Championships and the WWHL championship game saw the merger collapse. In 2007, Hockey Canada announced it would revamp the Esso Women's Nationals, with the WWHL champion and finalist meeting the Canadian Women's Hockey League (CWHL) champion and finalist. Since 2009, teams from the two leagues instead compete for the Clarkson Cup at the end of the season. Keely Brown (goaltender)
Keely Brown is a former Canadian national level athlete who played ringette, roller in-line hockey, and ice hockey as a goaltender. She played for the Canadian Senior National Ringette Team and was also a goalie on the Canadian Women's National Inline Hockey team. Brown also played semi-professional ringette in Canada's National Ringette League and in semi-pro women's ice hockey. Brown currently works for the National Hockey League's, Edmonton Oilers as a Senior Legal Counsel, and works for the Oilers Entertainment Group (OEG). In ringette as an athlete, Brown has won the World Ringette Championships gold medal once, and the silver medal three times. She has won five more silver medals in coaching and consulting positions for the national Canadian ringette teams in both junior and senior levels. Colleen Sostorics
Colleen Kay Sostorics (born December 17, 1979, in Kennedy, Saskatchewan) is a Canadian retired women's ice hockey defenseman. She played extensively for Canada at the international level, including three Olympic gold medals ( 2002 in Turin, 2006 in Salt Lake City, and 2010 in Vancouver). At the Women's World Championships, Sostorics helped Canada to three gold and three silver medals, and at the 4 Nations Cup, she captured five gold medals and one silver medal. When not playing with Canada, she competed at the club level for the Calgary Oval X-Treme, in the Western Women's Hockey League (WWHL). Correne Bredin
Correne (Bredin) Taves (born February 11, 1980) was a member of the Canadian National women's Under 22 team from 1999 to 2001, and a member of the Canadian National women's senior team from 2001 to 2007. Twice, she was an alternate to the Canadian Olympic women's ice hockey team (2002 and 2006, respectively). Playing career Bredin competed for many years in the Western Women's Hockey League. The first team she competed with was the Edmonton Chimos from 1996 to 1998. In 1997, she was part of the Chimos squad that claimed the Canadian National women's ice hockey championship. She would help the Calgary Oval X-Treme claim several championships, including the 2004 NWHL, 2005 and 2007 WWHL, and 2007 Canadian national championships. Kelly Bechard
Kelly Paige Bechard (born January 22, 1978) is a women's ice hockey player. Bechard competed for Canada at the World Championships in 2000 and 2001. In 2002, she competed for Canada at the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. Born in Sedley, Saskatchewan, Bechard was also a provincial doubles badminton champion in High School. In the gold medal game, Bechard was called for a tripping penalty late in the third period, and this led to Karyn Bye of the United States scoring a goal. The goal made the score 3-2 in Canada’s favour, as Bechard was part of the first Canadian Women's Hockey Gold Medal hockey team in Olympic history. Samantha Holmes
Samantha Holmes (born June 23, 1977) played for the Canadian national women's ice hockey team from 2000 to 2005. She is also the founder of the Strathmore Rockies ice hockey team. Early life As a child, Samantha Holmes-Domagala attended the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Alberta. Upon her arrival, she was disappointed to learn that there would not be a women’s hockey tournament. After the games, she became involved in activism, beginning a letter writing campaign to get women involved in ice hockey. She wrote to her local newspaper, Mississauga mayor Hazel McCallion, Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, and IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch.
