Maltese Second Division
The Maltese Second Division (also known as the BOV Second Division due to sponsorship reasons) was the third-highest division in Maltese football until 2020 when it was merged with the Maltese Third Division to create the National Amateur League. Structure 13 clubs formed the league and each played every other club twice. Three points were awarded for a win, one for a draw and zero for a loss. At the end of the season, the top two teams were promoted to the First Division, while the bottom two were relegated to the Third Division. Birgu ( mt, Il-Birgu , it, Vittoriosa), also known by its title Città Vittoriosa ("''Victorious City''"), is an old fortified city on the south side of the Grand Harbour in the South Eastern Region of Malta. The city occupies a promontory of land with Fort Saint Angelo at its head and the city of Cospicua at its base. Żejtun ( mt, Iż-Żejtun ) is a city in the South Eastern Region of Malta, with a population of 11,218 at end 2016. Żejtun is traditionally known as Città Beland, a title conferred by the grandmaster of the Order of the Knights of Malta, Ferdinand von Hompesch zu Bolheim in 1797. Before that, the village was known as Casale Santa Caterina, named after its patron saint and parish titular. Birżebbuġa St
Birżebbuġa (; sometimes shortened to B'Buġa) is a seaside town in the Southern Region of Malta, close to Marsaxlokk. It is approximately from the capital Valletta, and it has a population of 9,736 as of March 2014. The town is popular among Maltese holidaymakers, and is known for its sandy beach, Pretty Bay. The 2005–06 Maltese First Division (known as 2005–06 BOV First Division for sponsorship reasons) started on 10 September 2005 and finished on 14 May 2006. Lija Athletic and St. Patrick were the teams which were relegated from the 2004–05 Maltese Premier League. Tarxien Rainbows and St.Andrews were the promoted teams. St. Georges were the champions and Marsa were the runners-up. Both were promoted to the Premier League. Lija Athletic and St. Andrews were relegated. This was two straight relegations for Lija while St. Andrews were sent back down having just been promoted. Marsa and Mosta were relegated from Maltese Premier League. Tarxien Rainbows and San Gwann were promoted from Maltese Second Division with the latter (San Ä wann) having won a promotion playoff against Vittoriosa Stars. St. Patrick were the champions while Lija Athletic were runners-up. Both were promoted to Maltese Premier League. Tarxien Rainbows and Rabat Ajax were relegated to Maltese Second Division with the former having just clinched promotion only to go straight down again. Maltese Third Division
The Maltese Third Division (also known as the BOV Third Division due to sponsorship reasons) was the lowest league level in Maltese football until 2020 when it was merged with the Maltese Second Division to create the National Amateur League. History The league was founded in 2000. Until 2011 the division comprised two sections - Section A with eleven teams and Section B with eleven teams. Both sections play two rounds with the winner in each group getting promoted to the Maltese Second Division. Relegation play-offs between the 2nd and 3rd placed teams of both groups and the 10th-place finisher of Second Division determined the third team to be in the Second Division. Because it is the lowest level in the Maltese Football League, there is no formal relegation from the league. However, the two lowest placed teams have to reapply to take part the following season.
