It was won for the seventh time by Orlando Pirates, who defended their title won in 1996. The competition had not been held since that year after the Premier Soccer League removed it from the calendar due to overcrowding. The MTN 8 is a South African soccer single-elimination tournament, cup competition launched in 1972 for teams who finished in the top 8 positions of the league table of the country's preceding season of the top-flight league (currently the South African Premiership, Premiership). The winners receive South African Rand, R10 million and the competition's trophy, which is one of the three domestic trophies attainable by its competitors each soccer season, with the other two being the top-flight league title and the country's premier knock-out competition, the Nedbank Cup. The BP Top 8 2001 was the 27th edition of the competition, then known as the BP Top 8 for sponsorship reasons, featuring the top 8-placed teams at the conclusion of the Premiership season. It was won for the twelfth time by Kaizer Chiefs, their first Top 8 title in the PSL-era. After Sundowns had lost the penalty shootout, Daniel Mudau, who had scored both Sundown's goals, but was substituted shortly before Chief's last-minute equaliser, struck teammate Charles Motlohi, believing he had refused to take a crucial penalty. 1999–2000 South African Premiership
The 1999–2000 South African Premiership, known as the 1999–2000 Castle Premiership for sponsorship purposes, and also commonly referred to as the PSL after the governing body, was the fourth season of the Premiership since its establishment in 1996. The season began on 30 July 1999 and ended on 4 June 2000. Mamelodi Sundowns once again managed to secure their crown, sealing their third successive PSL title. Along with their success in the PSL's predecessor - winning three National Soccer League titles in 1988, 1990 and 1993 - this gave Mamelodi Sundowns their 6th South African championship. The Premier Soccer League (PSL) is the administrative body for professional soccer leagues and cups in South Africa. It is based in Johannesburg, and was founded in 1996 following an agreement between the National Soccer League and the remnants of the National Professional Soccer League (NPSL). Affiliated to the South African Football Association (SAFA), the PSL organizes the country's top two professional divisions in the South African Premiership and the National First Division, and knockout cup competitions in the Nedbank Cup and the MTN 8.
