The 1999–2000 Maltese Premier League (known as the Rothmans Premier League for sponsorship reasons) was the 20th season of the Maltese Premier League, and the 85th season of top-tier football in Malta. It was contested by 10 teams, and Birkirkara F.C. won the championship. The Maltese Premier League, known as 360Sports Malta Premier for sponsorship reasons with 360Sports (colloquialism, colloquially known as ''Il-Kampjonat Premjer''), is the highest level of professional football in Malta. Managed by the Malta Football Association, the Premier League is contested by 12 teams and operates on a promotion and relegation system with the Maltese Challenge League, Challenge League. Rufin Oba (born 20 February 1976 in the Republic of the Congo) is a Congolese retired footballer who last played for Birkirkara of the Maltese Premier League in 2003. Malta Spending three years with Floriana of the Maltese Premier League, Oba was the leading goal-scorer in the 2000–01 Maltese Premier League season with 12 goals. Michael Galea (footballer)
Michael Galea (born 1 February 1979 in Malta) is a retired Maltese footballer who started playing for Maltese First Division side Melita and enjoyed most of his career with Birkirkara where he played as a striker. Playing career Michael started his career with Melita and, in fact, he was a Melita product before being transferred to Birkirkara FC during the 1997–1998 season at a very young age of 18 years. Galea is considered to be the best striker that the 'Stripes' ever had and, with constant loyalty to the Birkirkara FC shirt, he is the club's best scorer ever. From his first day in the yellow and red shirt, Michael has shown his striker level, and despite being so young, he managed to score no less than 14 goals in his first 1997–1998 season. Nenad Veselji (born 3 February 1971) is a retired footballer who played as a striker. Born in the SFR Yugoslavia, he represented Malta internationally. Club career Veselji started his career while still in Yugoslavia playing for OFK Beograd. In 1994, he came to Malta and started playing for Floriana FC where he played for three seasons. In 1997, he moved to Valletta FC. He spent his best years of his career playing for Valletta, where he stayed until January 2001, when he moved for a short spell with Birkirkara FC. Gilbert Agius
Gilbert Agius (born 21 February 1974) is a Maltese professional football manager and former footballer who played as a forward. He has a UEFA Pro coaching license. Playing career Agius was the captain of his hometown club side Valletta and is one of the most well known and highly respected figures in Maltese football history. He is hailed as a hero by the Valletta fans, due to his loyalty to his hometown club, where he played since 1990, bar a short spell during the first half of the 2001–02 season which he spent on loan to the Lega Pro Prima Divisione club Pisa. Michael Mifsud (born 17 April 1981) is a Maltese former professional association football, footballer. 2000–01 Maltese First Division
The 2000–01 Maltese First Division (known as the Rothmans First Division for sponsorship reasons) started on 9 September 2000 and finished on 29 April 2001. Gozo and Żurrieq were the relegated teams from the 1999–2000 Maltese Premier League. Marsaxlokk and Qormi were the promoted teams from the Maltese Second Division. Marsa finished as champions, by just one point, and were promoted to the 2001–02 Maltese Premier League alongside Lija Athletic, who finished runners-up. Tarxien Rainbows and Żurrieq were relegated to the 2001–02 Maltese Second Division. Promotion and relegation is used by sports leagues as a process where teams can move up and down among divisions in a league system, based on their performance over a season. Leagues that use promotion and relegation systems are sometimes called open leagues.
