2000–01 Maltese First Division
The 2000–01 Maltese First Division (known as the Rothmans First Division for sponsorship reasons) started on 9 September 2000 and finished on 29 April 2001. Gozo and Żurrieq were the relegated teams from the 1999–2000 Maltese Premier League. Marsaxlokk and Qormi were the promoted teams from the Maltese Second Division. Marsa finished as champions, by just one point, and were promoted to the 2001–02 Maltese Premier League alongside Lija Athletic, who finished runners-up. Tarxien Rainbows and Żurrieq were relegated to the 2001–02 Maltese Second Division. This was the second straight relegation for Żurrieq, having been relegated from the Premier League the previous season. Marsa suffered their only defeat at the hands of Żurrieq. Maltese First Division
The Maltese Challenge League (referred to as the BOV Challenge League for sponsorship reasons) is the second-highest division in Maltese football, behind the Maltese Premier League. The First Division was the precursor of the present Premier League until the latter was revamped for the 1980–81 season with the Maltese Challenge League instituted for the 2020–21 season following the premature end of the previous season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Format Since the 2022–23 season, the league is made up of eighteen teams. Over the course of the season, each team plays twice against the others in the league, resulting in each team completing thirty-four games in total. The 2001–02 Maltese Second Division (known as Rothmans Second Division 2001-02 due to sponsorship reasons) started on 29 September 2001 and ended on 19 May 2002.The relegated teams were Tarxien Rainbows and Zurrieq.The promoted teams were Msida SJ and Senglea Athletics. Msida SJ finished as champions, therefore being promoted once again, having just been promoted. Senglea Athletics too were promoted having just been promoted. In this season the number of participants was dropped from 13 to 12. Gzira United and Zebbug Rangers were relegated from the First Division, while Balzan Youths and Luqa St. Andrews were promoted from the Third. The league was won by Mqabba and Balzan Youths finished as runners-up. Both were promoted to the 2001–02 Maltese First Division. This were two straight promotions for Balzan Youths. It is one of the oldest towns in the country, and its population is 11,074 as of June 2021. History and origins The parish Church is dedicated to Philip of Agira and the feast is celebrated on the 2nd Sunday of June, although the actual feast day falls on the 12th day of May. The name of the town literally means "olives" in Maltese; it derives from the large olive groves that stood in and around the current location of the church and the centre of the town. Gżira ( mt, Il-Gżira) is a town in the Central Region of Malta. It is located between Msida and Sliema, also bordering on Ta' Xbiex. It has a population of 8,029 as of March 2014. The word ''Gżira'' means "island" in Maltese, and the town is named after Manoel Island which lies just adjacent to the town. The seafront of Gżira has views of the walled city of Valletta, which are illuminated at night, forming a backdrop to Manoel Island, the yacht marina and a seafront public garden. Kappara is located close to Gżira. The Orpheum Theatre is located in Gżira. Town history In the mid-19th century a villa was built in Gżira by Chevalier Jacob Tagliaferro. Xgħajra ( mt, Ix-Xgħajra) is a small village in the South Eastern Region of Malta. It is located on the coast, about halfway between Valletta and Marsaskala. Hamrun (; ) is a town in the Southern Region of Malta, with a population of 9,244 as of March 2014. The people The townspeople are traditionally known as ''Tas-Sikkina'' (literally meaning 'of the knife' or 'those who carry a knife') or as ''Ta' Werwer'' (which literally means 'those who scare' or more colloquially, 'the scary ones'). This appellation could stem from the fact that a considerable number of used to work as stevedores on the docks and thus carried a knife at all times. Another theory was that the community of Sicilians who settled here illegally in the 16th century danced a traditional dance which involved the wielding of small stilettos which they carried in their socks, waving them in the air and back to their sheaths. Żabbar ( mt, Ħaż-Żabbar, ), also known as Città Hompesch, is a city in the South Eastern Region of Malta. It is the sixth largest city in the country, with a population of 15,404 as of March 2014. Originally a part of Żejtun, Żabbar was granted the title of ''Città Hompesch'' by the last of the Grand Masters of the Order of St. John to reign in Malta, Ferdinand von Hompesch zu Bolheim. Mosta ( mt, Il-Mosta) is a small but densely populated city in the Northern Region of Malta. The most prominent building in Mosta is the Rotunda, a large basilica built by its parishioners' volunteer labour. It features the world's 3rd largest unsupported dome, and displays a replica of a German bombshell that famously crashed through the dome but did not detonate upon impact. Mosta celebrates the parish feast of the Assumption every 15 August. Mosta's feast day celebration is popular amongst both locals and tourists.
