1997 Offaly Senior Hurling Championship
The 1997 Offaly Senior Hurling Championship was the 100th staging of the Offaly Senior Hurling Championship since its establishment by the Offaly County Board in 1896. Seir Kieran were the defending champions. The final was played on 5 October 1997 at St Brendan's Park in Birr, between Birr and Seir Kieran, in what was their third meeting in the final overall and a first meeting in the final in three years. Birr won the match by 0–14 to 2–04 to claim their 13th championship title overall and a first title in three years. Birr GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club in Birr, County Offaly, Ireland. The club is affiliated to the Offaly Cork Board and is primarily concerned with the game of hurling, but also fields teams in Gaelic football. History Located in the town of Birr, on the Offaly- Tipperary border, Birr GAA Club was established in 1909. After just a few short years, the club had it's first success when, in 1912, they claimed the first of three Offaly SHC in four seasons. After a lapse of 23 years, Birr had a successful 10-year period between 1938 and 1948, during which time the club claimed six Offaly SHC titles. Birr won their 10th Offaly SHC in 1971. Birr had their most successful and dominant era in the 17-year period between 1991 and 2008. Seir Kieran GAA
Seir Kieran is a Gaelic Athletic Association club located in a parish and Electoral division (Ireland), Electoral Division of the same name in Ireland (population approximately 460). Seir Kieran takes its name from Saint Ciarán of Saigir, Ciarán of Saighir, who founded the parish as a ''civitas'' (a monastic city) in the 5th century. The club's playing facilities are situated in the village of Clareen in County Offaly, Ireland. Seir Kieran caters mainly to players of the games of hurling and camogie. However, the club has also competed in the Offaly football competitions and reached the Offaly Senior Football Semi-final in 1927. Johnny Dooley
Johnny Dooley (born 7 October 1971 in Clareen, County Offaly) is an Irish former hurling manager and player. He played hurling with his local club Clareen GAA and was a member of the Offaly senior inter-county team from 1991 until 2002. Dooley served as manager of the Westmeath senior inter-county team from 2007 until 2008. Early life Johnny Dooley was born just outside Clareen, County Offaly in 1971. He was born into a family that was steeped in hurling history. His father's uncle, Tom Dooley, as well as his mother's father and uncle had all played with Offaly in the junior All-Ireland finals in 1929 and 1923 respectively. Similarly, for almost two decades Johnny and his brothers Billy and Joe formed the backbone of the Offaly senior hurling team. The Offaly Senior Hurling Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the Molloy Environmental Senior Hurling Championship) is an annual hurling competition contested by top-tier Offaly GAA clubs. St Brendan's Park
St Brendan's Park (), known for sponsorship reasons as Grant Heating St. Brendan's Park, is a GAA stadium in Birr, County Offaly, Ireland. It is one of the main grounds of Offaly's Gaelic football and hurling teams. The ground has a capacity of 8,800. Prior to the development of O'Connor Park in Tullamore, the ground was the base of Offaly hurling and played host to intercounty competitions and to the Offaly hurling county final. Most Offaly games have since transferred to Tullamore. The stadium is named for the local patron saint Brendan of Birr (), not to be confused with the more famous Brendan the Navigator ().
