1991 French Polynesian Legislative Election
Legislative elections were held in French Polynesia on 17 March 1991 for the Territorial Assembly. Gaston Flosse's Tahoera'a Huiraatira won 18 of 41 seats, and Alexandre Léontieff's Polynesian Union coalition won 14. The Aia Api party won five, and Tāvini Huiraʻatira four. Following the election Flosse formed a coalition with Émile Vernaudon's Aia Api and was elected President of French Polynesia. The coalition lasted only six months. In September 1991, Flosse fired two Aia Api ministers, and instead formed a coalition with Jean Juventin. Jean Juventin
Jean Juventin (9 March 1928 – 28 May 2019) was a French politician. He was mayor of Papeete from 1977 to 1995. He was also president of the Assembly of French Polynesia from 1988 to 1991 and again from 1992 to 1995 and a deputy of the National Assembly for French Polynesia's 1st constituency from 1978 to 1986 and 1993 to 1997. He was a member of the Rally for the Republic political party. Tāvini Huiraʻatira
Tāvini Huiraʻatira (), also known as Tāvini huiraʻatira nō te ao māʻohi – FLP (), is a pro-independence political party in French Polynesia. Founded in 1977 as the ''Front de libération de la Polynésie'' (FLP), the party has been led since its inception by Oscar Temaru. From 2004 to 2013 it was part of the Union for Democracy (UPLD) coalition. The Tavini has primarily been an opposition party, but between 2004 and 2013 governed French Polynesia at various times as part of various coalition arrangements. History The party was founded in 1977 by Oscar Temaru under the name the Front for the Liberation of Polynesia (FLP). In 1983 it changed its name to ''Tāvini huiraʻatira nō te ao māʻohi – FLP'' and adopted the motto ''Te Atua tāʻu fatu'' ("The Lord is my master"). Aia Api
The Aia Api ( en, New Land) is a political party in French Polynesia. At the last legislative elections on May 23, 2004, and by-elections on February 13, 2005, the party was part of the Union for the Democracy (''Union pour la Démocratie''), that won 27 out of 57 seats. 1996 French Polynesian Legislative Election
Legislative elections were held in French Polynesia in May 1996 for the Assembly of French Polynesia, Territorial Assembly. The result was a victory for Tahoera'a Huiraatira, which won 22 of 41 seats. The pro independence Tāvini Huiraʻatira more than doubled its representation, from 4 to 10 seats, Aia Api won five, and Here Ai'a one. The remaining three seats were taken by independents Boris Léontieff (affiliated to the Fetia Api party), Milou Ebb, Tinomana Ebb, and Lucien Kimitete. Following the election Gaston Flosse was re-elected as President of French Polynesia. Oscar Temaru
Oscar Manutahi Temaru (born November 1, 1944) is a French politician. He has been President of French Polynesia (''président de la Polynésie française''), an overseas collectivity of France, on five occasions: in 2004, from 2005 to 2006, from 2007 to 2008, in 2009, and from 2011 to 2013 and mayor of Faa'a since 1983. Career He first served as the President of French Polynesia (''président de la Polynésie française'') from June 15, 2004 until his Government lost a no-confidence motion on October 8, 2004. He was the caretaker President for two weeks after that, but was forced to give up the presidency until March 2005, when he was reelected after parliamentary by-elections. Émile Vernaudon
Émile André Vernaudon (born 8 December 1943) is a former French Polynesian politician and Council of Ministers (French Polynesia), Cabinet Minister. The leader of the Aia Api party, he served as President of the Assembly of French Polynesia twice, first from 1981 to 1983, and the second time from 1991 to 1992. He served as Minister of Posts and Telecommunications in the Council of Ministers (French Polynesia), Cabinet of Oscar Temaru. He represented French Polynesia's 2nd constituency in the French National Assembly twice, from 1988 to 1993, and again from 1997 to 2002. From 1977 to 2008 he served as Mayor of Mahina, French Polynesia, Mahina. In 2007 he was convicted on the first of a long series of corruption charges stemming from his time as mayor of Mahina and as Minister of Posts and Telecommunications.
