The 1978 Minnesota gubernatorial election took place on November 7, 1978. Independent-Republican Party candidate Al Quie defeated Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party incumbent Rudy Perpich. Al Quie
Albert Harold Quie ( ; born September 18, 1923) is an American politician and farmer. Quie, who served as member of the United States House of Representatives and Governor of Minnesota, is regarded as a moderate Republican. Quie was strongly considered by Ronald Reagan to be Vice President of the United States during the 1980 presidential election. He was also on Gerald Ford's list for possible vice presidents following the resignation of Richard Nixon in 1974. Quie is currently the oldest living former governor of any U.S. state and the oldest living former member of the United States House of Representatives.Al (Albert Harold) Quie : Governors of Minnesota . Lou Wangberg
Louis Wangberg (born March 27, 1941) is an American educator who was the 41st lieutenant governor of Minnesota. He was elected on the Independent-Republican ticket with Governor Al Quie and served from January 1, 1979, to January 3, 1983. He also served as Quie's chief of staff for part of the term until he sought the governor's office on his own. In 1982, when Quie chose not to run for reelection, Wangberg was the Independent-Republican endorsed candidate for governor, but lost the primary to Wheelock Whitney. (DFL nominee Rudy Perpich won the election.) Wangberg first sought the congressional nomination for the Seventh District when Bob Bergland vacated the office to become Jimmy Carter's Secretary of Agriculture. Rudolph George Perpich Sr. (June 27, 1928 September 21, 1995) was an American politician and dentist who served as the governor of Minnesota from 1976 to 1979 and again from 1983 to 1991. A member of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, he is labeled as Minnesota's 34th and 36th governor. He was also the state's only Roman Catholic governor and the only one to serve non-consecutive terms. Early life and education Rudolph George Prpić was born in Carson Lake, Minnesota, which is now part of Hibbing. His father, Anton Prpić, was a miner who had immigrated from Croatia to Minnesota's Mesabi Iron Range, and his mother, Mary (Vukelich), was an American of Croatian descent. Alec Olson
Alec Gehard Olson (born September 11, 1930) is a former member of the U.S. House of Representatives, a former state senator, who served as the 40th Lieutenant Governor of Minnesota. He was born in Mamre Township in Kandiyohi County, Minnesota. Biography Olson attended public schools and graduated from Willmar High School in 1948. He farmed between 1948 and 1955, and was an insurance representative from 1955 to 1962. He was active in the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party from 1952 to 1962, serving as a district chairman for four years. The Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL) is the Minnesota affiliate of the U.S. Democratic Party.
