Emory Bellard
Emory Dilworth Bellard (December 17, 1927 – February 10, 2011) was a college football coach. He was head coach at Texas A&M University from 1972 to 1978 and at Mississippi State University from 1979 until 1985. Bellard died on February 10, 2011 after battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease) since the fall of 2010. Bellard is a member of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. He was considered to have had one of the most innovative offensive minds in football and is credited for inventing the wishbone formation. The 1989 John Hancock Bowl was a college football postseason bowl game between the Texas A&M Aggies of the Southwest Conference and the independent Pittsburgh Panthers. The Panthers, who entered ranked 24th in the Associated Press poll but unranked in the coaches' poll, defeated the Aggies, ranked 16th by the AP and 15th by the coaches, by a final score of 31-28. This was the first time in the history of the bowl that it carried a name other than the Sun Bowl, which had been the name of the game since its inauguration. 1977 NCAA Division I Football Season
The 1977 NCAA Division I football season was one in which the top five teams finished with 11–1 records. Notre Dame, which beat top-ranked and undefeated Texas in the Cotton Bowl, became the national champion. The 1977 season was the last before NCAA's Division I was divided into I-A and I-AA. On the eve of a national playoff for the smaller programs that would be I-AA, the Sugar Bowl in 1977 became the fourth bowl game to sign a contract guaranteeing an appearance by a major conference champion. Terry Jerome LeCount (born July 9, 1956) is an American former college and professional football player who was a wide receiver in the National Football League (NFL) for nine seasons during the 1970s and 1980s. Wesley Sandy Chandler (born August 22, 1956) is an American former professional football player who was a wide receiver in the National Football League (NFL) for eleven seasons during the 1970s and 1980s.
