The 1977 Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl was an American college football bowl game played on December 31, 1977, at the Astrodome in Houston, Texas. The game pitted the Texas A&M Aggies and the USC Trojans. Background The Trojans started the season ranked #4, and they won their first four games to rise to #1 in the polls before a matchup with #7 Alabama at home. A 21–20 loss dropped them to #6, and they responded with a win over Oregon. But losses to #11 Notre Dame and California dropped them to #16. A win over Stanford was soon followed with a loss to Washington that dropped them out of the rankings, though they did beat #17 UCLA to finish the season strong, albeit tied for 2nd with Stanford in the Pacific-8 Conference. Emory Bellard
Emory Dilworth Bellard (December 17, 1927 – February 10, 2011) was an American college and high school football coach and the inventor of the Wishbone formation. He was the head football coach at Texas A&M University from 1972 to 1978 and at Mississippi State University from 1979 until 1985. Bellard died on February 10, 2011, after battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease) since the fall of 2010. Bellard is a member of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame and the Texas High School Sports Hall Of Fame. He also won two National Championships at Texas as the offensive coordinator. Bluebonnet Bowl
The Bluebonnet Bowl was an annual college football bowl game played in Houston, Texas. A civic group was appointed by the Houston Chamber of Commerce Athletics Committee in 1959 to organize the bowl game. It was held at Rice Stadium (Rice University), Rice Stadium from 1959 through 1967, and again in 1985 and 1986. The game was played in the Reliant Astrodome, Astrodome from 1968 through 1984, as well in 1987. When held in the Astrodome, it was called the Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl. The proceeds from the bowl games were distributed to various Harris County, Texas, Harris County charitable organizations. The game was discontinued following the 1987 season due to poor ticket sales and lack of a title sponsor. Robert Alden Hertel (born February 21, 1955) is an American former professional football player who was a quarterback in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the USC Trojans from 1973 to 1977 and was a member of 1974 national championship team. Hertel was named MVP of the 1977 Astro Bluebonnet Bowl, going 11-15 for 254 yards and 4 touchdowns. He was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the fifth round of the 1978 NFL draft. The Southwest Conference (SWC) was an NCAA Division I college athletic conference in the United States that existed from 1914 to 1996. Composed primarily of schools from Texas, at various times the conference also included schools from Oklahoma and Arkansas. In North America, a bowl game, or simply bowl, is one of a number of postseason college football games primarily played by NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) teams. For most of its history, the FBS did not use a playoff tournament to determine an annual national champion, instead relying on a vote by sportswriters or coaches.
