Portland Timbers (1975–82)
The Portland Timbers are an American professional men's soccer club based in Portland, Oregon. The Timbers compete in Major League Soccer (MLS) as a member club of the league's Western Conference. The Timbers have played their home games at Providence Park since 2011, when the team began play as an expansion team in the league. The club was founded in 2009, when the city of Portland was awarded an expansion berth to Major League Soccer. The team operating rights are owned by Peregrine Sports under the majority ownership of Merritt Paulson, whose companies had acquired the then-USL Pro team in 2007 and later established the Portland Thorns women's team in 2012 (all MLS franchises are centrally owned by the league itself, which grants operating rights and privileges to the individual club "owners," who are also shareholders in MLS). Archie Roboostoff
Archie Vincent Roboostoff (October 9, 1951 – July 29, 2019) was an American soccer forward who spent five seasons in the North American Soccer League. He was also a member of the U.S. Olympic soccer team at the 1972 Summer Olympics. He was born in Shanghai, China. National and Olympic teams Roboostoff was selected for the U.S. Olympic team in 1971 as it began the qualification process for the 1972 Summer Olympics to be held in Munich. At the time he played for the Concordia Athletic Club in the San Francisco League. He played all three U.S. games in the tournament as the U.S. went 0-2-1. Following the Olympics, he was called into the U.S. national team. He earned his first cap when he replaced Emmanuel Georges at halftime of an August 10, 1973, loss to Poland. Las Vegas Quicksilvers
The Las Vegas Quicksilvers were an American soccer team that competed in the North American Soccer League (NASL) during the 1977 season. The team was based in Las Vegas, Nevada and played their home games at Las Vegas Stadium. After the 1977 season, the team relocated to San Diego and became the San Diego Sockers. Eusébio, considered by many "Africa's greatest-ever player" played seventeen games for the Quicksilvers scoring two goals. History Origins The team that would become the Quicksilvers was founded in January 1974 as the Baltimore Comets when the North American Soccer League added six expansion teams following the 1973 season. Vancouver Whitecaps (1974–84)
Vancouver Whitecaps Football Club is a Canadian professional soccer team based in Vancouver. They compete in Major League Soccer (MLS) as a member club of the league's Western Conference. The MLS iteration of the club was established on March 18, 2009, and began play in 2011 as the 17th team to enter Major League Soccer while replacing the USSF Division 2 team of the same name in the city, making them a phoenix club and the third to carry the Whitecaps name. Minnesota Kicks
The Minnesota Kicks were a professional soccer team that played at Metropolitan Stadium in the Minneapolis suburb of Bloomington, Minnesota, from 1976 to 1981. The team was a member of the now defunct North American Soccer League (NASL). Initially known as the Denver Dynamos, the team relocated and became the Minnesota Kicks in 1976. The Kicks quickly became one of the league's more popular teams, with an average attendance of 23,120 fans per game in 1976. The Kicks won their division four years in a row from 1976 to 1979. Ike MacKay (born August 2, 1948) is a Canadian former soccer forward. Club career A Nanaimo area product, MacKay graduated from Oak Bay High School. MacKay played four North American Soccer League seasons. He played for the Vancouver Royals in the league's inaugural season, 1968. MacKay later played three seasons with the Portland Timbers, scoring 3 goals in 10 games in 1976, 1 goal in 16 games in 1977, and 2 assists in 24 games in 1978. He missed eleven games of the 1978 North American Soccer League season as the Nanaimo school board would not approve a leave of absence from his teaching position. International career MacKay played nine times, scoring one goal, for the Canadian national soccer team. Jim Gorsek
James Gorsek (born October 12, 1955 in Portland, Oregon), known as Jim Gorsek or Jimmy Gorsek, is a former American soccer goalkeeper. He spent seven seasons in the North American Soccer League, seven seasons in the Major Indoor Soccer League and two in the Continental Indoor Soccer League. He also earned two caps with the U.S. national team in 1985. Professional Gorsek signed with the Portland Timbers of the North American Soccer League in 1977 as a striker replacement player. He played three games that season, none in 1978 and only one in 1979. In 1980, he saw time in twelve games, but was traded to the San Diego Sockers. In 1981, he played two games, but is not listed on the team’s roster for 1982. Paul Hendrie
Paul Hendrie (born 27 March 1954) is a Scottish former football midfielder who made nearly 400 professional appearances. His son, midfielder Lee Hendrie, made a late substitute appearance for England in 1998. Another son, Stuart, played league football for Morecambe. Hendrie's nephew, John Hendrie, is also a Scottish former professional footballer. Playing career Paul Hendrie had been playing in his native Scotland in the junior set up at Kirkintilloch Rob Roy. Brian Gant
Brian Reginald Gant (born April 23, 1952) is a Canadian retired soccer player who spent nine seasons in the North American Soccer League and played fifteen games with the Canada national team. Player Professional After playing college soccer at Simon Fraser University, Gant signed with the Vancouver Whitecaps of the North American Soccer League in 1974. Patrick "Pat" McMahon (born 19 September 1945) is a Scottish former footballer who is best known for the time he spent with Aston Villa and Celtic.http://www.croyhistorical.org.uk/football Kilsyth Rangers McMahon began his football career at local Scottish team Kilsyth Rangers. Anthony Thomas Betts (born 31 October 1953) is an English former footballer who played as a forward. He played in the Football League, the North American Soccer League, and the Major Indoor Soccer League. He began his career at Aston Villa, featuring in the 1972 FA Youth Cup final. He was loaned out to Southport in 1974–75, before he emigrated to America to play for the Portland Timbers.
